We are looking at these boards for a couple of theatres but struggling to find anyone who has actually used one. Anyone bumped into one of these? Link to their website here: ADB

Rare brand, even rarer in NZ! Are they Belgium based?

ADB? Rare?

News to me. ADB lanterns are pretty commonplace in theatre, particularly on the west side of the atlantic...

Yep, but we're talking lighting desks here aren't we? Have you seen many in your extensive travels, Topcat?

Desk? No never.

But the brand - ADB. Yes, many many times. It's not a very rare brand, that's all.

By coincidence, I'll be spending a couple of days on a Liberty in a couple of weeks (although not in a theatrical environment). I'm hoping the Hathor sofware will be an improvement on the ISIS which was certainly showing its age a bit! I will try and report back some general impressions - is there anything in particular you'd like me to look out for?

I have used their lamps and dimmers often. Very well made kit. The only time I ever met one of their boards was in a theatre in Beauvais, and it was quite old. Seemed okay and fairly solid. So are they trying to break into the market in New Zealand then? Curious as to why you are considering one.

And PK, you say the old software was called ISIS eh? Hmmm.. now is probably a good time to quietly retire that.

Part of the work our company does is specification for theatre. We recently had to pull a spec on a Strand 250ML due to reliability issues in their software. The Ions are quite expensive here so always good to know who else is out there making good boards. I am guessing this control product sells better in Europe than the UK. I appears well made so why has no one heard of it when we all know of their lanterns?

Hi P.K.

Basically how intuitive the board is. It's good that you can sit down at it with minimun reference to the manual and be able to build a lighting state and record and play it back. This is usually a good sign as to how ergonomic the board and its software are. Look forward to reading your comments.

I have no experience with the current ADB boards but they have been making theatrical control systems for decades.

Always very solidly made and very reliable but you need to get your head around them. The older systems were quite different from Strand systems (we are talking Galaxy here BTW ;) )

I do remember a funny story from the mid 80's when I was lighting an opera production in Breda in the Netherlands. They had an ADB board, can't remember the model, which was one of the first computer controlled systems. There were some weird things happening during the programming session and with the factory just down the road, the house techs called the factory and were put through to the R&D department. Very friendly guy took the call and said: "There will be an error code in the bottom right hand corner of the screen (one of those proper green CRT screens), what does it say?" The house tech replied "-01" and the response was "Whoa, that is serious!" When we asked why it was serious his response was "We didn't program and error code -01, it is doing things on its' own". An hour later there was a van with a replacement board at the venue.

The ADB reps came out to Entech a couple of times years ago but I guess they gave up on Australia, and possibly NZ. Pity because their lights were great and would have made a positive impact if someone had the guts to sell them and support them here.
