Remote Pyro firing system

Hi guys,

I'm the production manager with a touring theatre company. Our current touring show uses 2 x Le Maitre theatre flash pyros, fired at 2 different times during the show by myself at the ops point. We don't tour with an sm and all the performers are on stage when the pyros are fired. What I'm hoping to do away with is touring with 100m of cable that is needed to go from the flash pods on stage back to the ops point from where I fire the pyros. I've seen this system but am concerned by the fact that there is no key system or dead switch on the remote.

Dose anyone have any other suggestions so that I can cu6t down the get in time and not carry around so much cable?

Thanks,

Alex

Thanks but in this day and age of austerity it's just not practical to hire somebody to tour with us just to push a button twice/show. I always ensure I have clear line of sight and am never more than 50 metres away - 2 x 50m cables - 1 per flash pod. I could use the venue staff but I know the show better than they ever will and the timings are key to the show even though the show has a lot of improvisation within it thus making any kind of queing system difficult, particularly as some venues dont have cans or stage q system.

Dose anyone have any other suggestions so that I can cu6t down the get in time and not carry around so much cable?

yep hire someone to fire the pyros who has a clear line of sight instead of being 100 meters away

You're right to be concerned; they're ######.

All of those cheap systems use a very congested part of the frequency spectrum. They're nothing more than glorified garage door openers.

Either stick with cable or be prepared to pay several hundreds for a decent two way RF system.

It's very simple.... you can either pay out a lot of money for a properly safe, stable wireless control system, or pay out a lot of money to hire in an extra member of staff who can fire them from a closer position. It's explosives we are talking about, there simply isn't a cheep way to do what you want to do beyond your current method of using a lot of cable.

This is the only professional solution. The venues I work in would never allow a pyro operator to be 50m away from the stage. No fire marshall would approve that.

Just to prevent our Australian friend Roderick getting irate, if you cannot afford to do it properly and to manufacturer's instructions, then you simply do not do it.

Austerity is no excuse where safety is concerned and you should not be firing from that sort of position under any circumstances.

You should also remember that those cheap wireless systems are NOT instant, and they tend to fail if you push buttons with less than a 1 second wait. They are OK for fireworks with safety distances in the order of hundreds of metres, but with prox safety distance in the order of hundreds of mm they are too poor for use on stage.
