alexl102
Hi, I work on a voluntary basis for a Youth Centre, and they've got a set of Turbosound TCS-081C speakers (Impedance 8Ohms, Power 200W RMS 400W Prog) but some plonker has driven the system too hard and blown the 8" drivers in them. I contacted Turbosound and they can supply the part, LS-8010, but they want £54 for each one and, bearing in mind that we need at least a pair (though we have got 4 speakers and expect to need the other two in the near future for something else), I could really do with finding a lower-cost alternative without compromising on the quality as the Youth Centre doesn't have money to burn. My knowledge of the loudspeaker market is absolutely non-existent, but going on the basis of other things, I presume that Turbosound will charge the highest amount because their product has their name on it, whereas there will be other companies who make equally good products for a lower price. Could anyone suggest where I might be able to find such a thing? I looked at Maplin (with great reluctance) but their most powerful 8" was only 90W. I've googled various things and checked ebay but I'm no expert in these things so I'm not entirely sure what to look for. Also, I believe, though I'm not certain, that this model of speaker is quite old and the range isn't produced any more. Will this mean that in the next few years sourcing replacement parts will become harder and more expensive, or are parts fairly standard? Would it be cheaper in the long run to replace the speakers altogether rather than buying new cones? They've been in about 8 years, I think, though I don't know if they were brand new then as the centre was furnished and equipped with a mix of new, ex-display and donated equipment. I'm sorry for my total lack of knowledge in this area - ask me about microphones and I'll talk all day but I've never had to sort speakers before now! Many thanks in advance. smalljoshua
£54 for a good quality 8" driver is very good IMO. You'll only have to replace them again sooner if you don't fit the correct part. Josh
chelgrian
£54 for a good quality 8" driver is very good IMO. You'll only have to replace them again sooner if you don't fit the correct part. And/or the speaker will sound terrible because it's being used with either a lower quality driver or a driver which has completely different characteristics to the one which the cabinet and crossover network is designed for. I would also highly recommend to the OP that they buy the driver from Turbosound.
mkfs9
Agree that's not a bad price for a quality driver.
alexl102
Thanks for the replies. I'll be speaking with the guy in charge of the wallet this weekend, get him to fork out for the turbosound drivers. Once again, I appreciate you all taking the time to reply. paulears
If you managed to fit something else for half price, they'd at best sound different and at worst sound awful. Then the money would be wasted.
