HK Audio Service & Repair

Hi there guys! Im a massive newbie here but looking for some information!

I have a HK Actor (Original non-DX) and one of the tops has given up! I opened the amp casing to find that the glass fuses had blown. I attempted (quicky as I had first band on in 10 mins) to replace the fuses with what turned out to be quick blow fuses (F4a) rather than the time delay fuses it is supposed to have (T4a).

I ended up replacing with another top for the show, however I have another gig in the morning. I can grab another Actor top from a friend just in case but if I replace the T4a fuses with T4a fuses will it work again?! I can't see any charred bits on the boards, burnt out resistors etc...

Also, looking at getting the whole lot serviced by a HK Dealer / Specialist as got a Soundcraft desk and some Lexicon effects (seeing as they are all manufactured by harman group). Does anyone know some place in or near Sheffield, UK I can get this done?

Thanks in advance for the help!!!

Just to be clear, are you saying that you HAVE changed the fuses and it hasn't worked, or are you asking if the fuses blowing is likely to be the symptom or the cause of the problem before you try to change them? If they are quick blow fuses where time delay fuses are specified then I am not at all surprised that they have blown - I would change them and try the system out again!

I have never had any luck finding a service company for HK stuff. I believe that the official importer is JHS so maybe you can drop them a line to see what they recomend? If you find someone can you report back here?

On a final note, HKaudio is nothing to do with Harmon group, and never has been. They are part of Stamer group in Germany.

Good luck!

I do quite a lot of HK repairs and have never seen the fuses blow without there being a shorted output stage. The fuses are downstream of any large caps so I replace them with 800mA quick blow for initial testing then put T4A in for final test.

Unfortunately I'm a bit far away from you in Surrey and won't be in Sheffield for a couple of weeks!

John Hornby Skewes (JHS) are in Leeds (Garforth) and are the official agent as already mentioned. They have a service department for HK.

I agree it is likely the output transistors, the actor mk1 amps use a standard bipolar / biamp design (with a module bridged for the bass cabs) and you may find dry joints and electrolytics tired as well. Whilst it's apart, check the gain pot, they often go noisy and it's easier to replace it at the same time as the other repairs. If you're tempted to DIY the repair, be careful with the ribbon cables, they're brittle.
