Digital mixer side rack

Hello,

I am currently using a Yamaha 01V96, and there is nothing wrong with it - however I am currently in the process of getting another, larger format digital mixer system which will suit the majority of my work.

With the 01V96, I use a side rack with a rack light, an additional A/D and D/A unit for more inputs and outputs over ADAT, a laptop firewire audio interface, a TC Electronic M3000 (because the reverbs are better than the Yamaha SPX algorithms, which I also like and use in places, and it does some very clever digital signal routing in many formats), and an analog parametric eq (because it comes in useful for lots of things).

If using a side rack with a more comprehensive medium or large format digital mixer, what are people putting into them? E.g. a rackmount UPS, a rackmount wireless router, a lockable 2U rack drawer for the obligatory iPad, rackmount laptop, rackmount toaster, etc?

Also: how are people securing the iPad at FOH when the public are milling around? Also the wireless router? I'm thinking a lockable rack drawer is the way to go, but I'm interested in hearing other people's solutions...

Many Thanks!

Dave C.

a boring answer but nothing. when using an x32 I don't use an ipad (though maybe I should). one band I work with have a router to allow then to do their own ipads and phones for monitor mixes. I really should carry a UPS but so far over the last 14 months or so, I haven't had a real world problem. interfaces are all on board. I never really liked the yamaha reverbs but the x32 stuff sounds great, straight out of the box. I guess in part it's lazy but in truth that's the selling point of a digital desk - no rack needed and a faster set up time. (provided I have programmed the show before hand)

I've thought about putting in a UPS/ power conditioner, and have done so on my smaller speaker amp rack (and will likely put one into each of my amp racks and with my desks), but like S&L said, both my digital desks pretty much have me covered in terms of GEQs, PEQs and effects. I don't have an iPad (and staunchly refuse to get one [I'll just make it crash horribly anyway]), so can't use the ViSi remote with the Expression, and ViSi isn't supported on the Si2. I do have a little Dell 10" netbook, that I just attach to either desk's flightcase with a kensington lock (when I remember to pack it), which I use for offline editor and Audacity. A 2U drawer might be useful, especially for bits like gender changers/ other specials/ firewire cables etc..

Hi Dave!

Haven't seen you since the Rose of Tralee street festival many moons ago!

Memories of moving Nexo Bins!!!

I've a Yamaha LS9 & a Behringer X32 and I have opted to just stick the wireless router into the desk flight case in the bottom of the dog box.

Re the IPAD - I just take it with me when heading away from desk for food etc.

Hi Alan,

nice to see you on here! I've still got those Nexo boxes, and have added some AlphaE and S2 subs aswell. I like this Nexo stuff...

I'm using an X32 occasionally (not mine) and I like it but I'm going for something a little more upmarket. I'm also running lab gruppen amps and will likely throw the rackmount network bridge in either the amp rack or a mixer side rack in order to monitor performance from FOH. I'm also going to be doing a theatre tour starting in a couple of months and really don't want to be dragging the iPad everywhere with me during breaks etc, which is why I'm considering a locking rack drawer. At the moment I secure the FOH laptop with a kensington lock. The wifi router will likely fit in the console case dogbox (I've actually ordered the case to fit it), and I'm really just asking around to see if there's anything I've forgotten.

If anyone else has any other ideas I'm all ears!

Cheers,

Dave.

With locking the ipad theres now a range of cases fro kensington (and im sure many others) such as these:

I know some people have gone for the rugged cases for work ipads, but personally I think adding a huge case (which admittedly is fairly indestructible) completely defeats the point of buying a nice neat slim tablet!
