Brian
From today's Independent... Tax inquiry into unpaid music interns The music business is to face a tax enquiry over unpaid interns...HM Revenue and Customs has warned firms about the consequences of using unpaid interns. The tax authorities fined more than 800 employers last year and recovered £4m in underpaid wages for 26,000 workers.
Brian
And so it rumbles on... "Tory Party denies claims it advised MPs how to avoid minimum wage." If anyone is morally bankrupt enough to want to avoid paying people for an honest day's work then the advice published by the Conservatives can be found here. kitlane
Don't get me wrong, I would be the first in the queue to bash a tory, but when I read their guidance note it didn't seem to be quite what everyone is saying. It outlines the legal position regarding volunteers and payments and suggests the wording that should be used in an advert (for example) for volunteers. I don't see this as any different to what a charity shop would have to do with regards to their volunteers.
kerry davies
The immorality of modern "charities" who use the disabled and terminal cancer patients as the mandated Workfare victims of current political ideologues is another subject entirely. Internships are one of the root causes of elitism and inequality leading to a feudalistic and nepotistic means of ensuring idiots remain in charge of the country. Apart from that, I see no problems. Tax evasion and forced labour are standard practice in the UK nowadays.
kitlane
I'm not sure where this topic is going and I fear I may be misinterpreting others comments. If I volunteer to serve behind the counter at a local charity shop for a few hours a week is that forced labour or tax evasion? If I volunteer to sell programmes at my local theatre every Friday night is that forced labour or tax evasion? If I volunteer to stuff envelopes for the local branch of the Green Party is that forced labour or tax evasion? If I volunteer to stuff envelopes for the local branch of the Conservative Party is that forced labour or tax evasion?
