Lotus
This is probably the wrong place to ask, so apologies in advance!I am planning on travelling to Britain late this year or early next, and I amlooking for some work to sustain my trip. Can anyone point me in the rightdirection as to where to look for lx work or event/production/venue management work? Any headers at all would be hugely appreciated, Im from Australia, so Ihave no idea where to even begin!
MikeR
Austalian ? Sorry but the most obvious answer is http://www.gallowglass.co.uk/ contact them and youll see why. THey seem to be almost entirely staffed by Australians New Zealanders & South Africans . It may not be the sort of work youre looking for depending on your experience but as long as youre a hefty lad with some common sense and not afraid of sweating then it will keep you in rent and beer money. If youve got experience thatll make you more attractive to them but may make them less attractive to you. At least its a first port of call. I called tham last year about vacancies and was told their "team" (I'm sure crew would be a better term) was currently full as they had just recruited the whole of the bradford under 21's rugby squad! Lotus
Ive got plenty of common sense and im certainly not afraid of breaking out into a sweat, but Gallow Glass doesnt look like it would suit me. Im not at all hefty and if I played rugby I would probably get snapped in two... I am ideally looking for LD or Event/Prod management work. I have a lot of experience as a theatre, dance and rock n roll designer and operator as well as theatre and event production managent and festival event management. Are there many (or even any) opportunities for someone more interested in using their head than their muscle?
MikeR
As an unkown quantity you have the same chances as anyone else I would have thought. Locate your target companies and send them a cv etc. Sorry to have pointed you to gallowglass I had a feeling you were after more than just crewing. But at least what they would offer you is ready cash in the first instance that is if they had any vacancies. I would be suprised if they didnt but then I wouldnt ring them to ask either. GridGirl
Check out the Stage - www.thestage.co.uk, there are new jobs on their Recruitment (Theatre) page every week. I'm a Kiwi, and it worked for me! One piece of advice I would give you though is to not bother applying for jobs until just before you leave Australia or get here - it's just not worth it. I had no trouble finding work once I got here, just be prepared to travel round to interviews B-)
