smoke fluid

ok im technical support here at EVL lighting

just recently, I have a load of repairs sent back, with a lot of smoke damage.

the most alarming thing, is the fact that the paint is pealing off. ive spoken to my customers (not end users, service engineers) and it happens to everyones fixtures, not just ours.

it has happened in 3 different venues, which strangley enough are using the same machine and fluid.

im getting a little concerned. obviously theres the damage being sustained by the fixtures, but more importantly, is this doing any damage to people?, bearing in mind that they are breathing it in all night.

I havent seen it, but apparently this smoke fluid has all the relevant health certifcates, but this cant be right can it?

anyone come across this before?

yes, there is a lot of internal damage.

its the nature of the beast unfortunatley. the fixture drags air in for cooling. in a smokey environment, the smoke obviously gets drawn in to the unit. unit cools down and smoke fluid condensates. ive seen it countless times, however this paint pealing is concernng me.

I know years ago, smoke fluid used to be pretty nasty stuff, but was under the impression it had all advanced some what.

Hi fish.

Yes this is a common problem with many fixtures.

To get real significant damage the units have to be subjected to very high levels of smoke or haze.

I have also witnessed people putting smoke machines close to fixtures and this way the fans suck in huge amounts of smoke.

The biggest reason danage is caused is because people dont look after there fixtures, the internals should be cleaned frequently, and external optics should be cleaned daily if you can.

All electrical equipment sucks in crap, smoke fluid, dust, tabacco.

Its just a case of maintaining.

I havent had any of my fixtures rust yest, and I havent seen any that have due to adverse smoke damage.

what I have seen is paint pealing on certain brands.

Usaly the cheaper brands of fixtures, like chauvet, abstract, ACME, Source, and sorry to say as you have mentioned EVL.

I think the paint pealing is actully down to moisture getting between the metal and the sprayed paint. I have also noticed that some products dont have a primed layer of paint, as on car bodies, instead the paint is sprayed direct onto the metal.

I dont think it is due to the smoke fluid reacting, more of a case of damp. If you dont clean your fixtures either the paint will lift in a matter of weeks.

Maybe you have to check your products for corrosion and chemical reaction, with leading and budget smoke fluids. Due to be sure.
