Hi all,

Have linked to this article (http://www.lsionline.co.uk/news/story.asp?ID=11DXMQ) in the sound forum as well but thought it would be interesting for you to know that the LD for Acorn Antiques specified a FPS Hog II ro program/ run the the show on even though its a more sort of 'theatre' show with a cue stack. Goes to show despite what some people think they really are quite versatile beasts, at home in a theatre as well as with rock and roll!

Its a common misconception, that Hogs are "Moving Lights only". They have a command-line interface, cue stacks and pretty much all the tools you need to manipulate conventionals AND all the fancy moving Carlos Fandango bits too.

A Hog 2 will look after theatre cue-stacks as well as an ETC or a Strand, no problem... It just doesn't have the subs that you might want, and you may prefer a wheel for levels rather than a dial.

Several west end shows use the hog as there desk, I'm pretty sure that We Will Rock You's on a Hog. Mamma Mia is on a GrandMA, Women In White and I think Les Miserables are on Strand 500 series.

So its whatever desk the LD and programmers feel most comfortable with.

Why isn't it a good example? Are you under the impression that the LX for WWRY is "busked" every night? Becasue I'm pretty sure its a strict cuesheet, called by a DSM just like all the rest of them.

And although there are a lot of movers, there's also a lot of conventionals too...I'm sure Piers could tell us exactly how many....

we will rock you is a rock musical, so is not really a good example imho

So what? WWRY might be a rock musical, but it's still a musical - the show runs the same way every night, tightly structured, flowing linearly from beginning to end, and called by a DSM. So it's no different to any other piece of theatre in that respect.

And Bryson's right, many people who've never had the pleasure of programming/operating a Hog2 simply don't realise that it's very much a theatre-friendly desk. In fact, there are many consoles which are supposedly 'theatre' desks around which the Hog2 would run rings, even on a show with no moving light component in the rig. As Bryson says, as long as you can live with the lack of submasters and the fact that your intensity control is on a rotary rather than a 'traditional' wheel (could be worse, it could be on a trackpad!), then the Hog2 is a great desk for theatre.

I utilise a hog on all my theatre shows whenever possible and run it in a theatre style cuelist or stack, worked great for the last 5 years long may they keep flying.

To be fair to those other desks, Hog 2s were disturbingly expensive when you could buy them...so it's not really surprising they were good bits of kit...

FYI Mamma Mia is on a Virtuoso DX2

The Starlight Express tour is running off a Hog 2 / Hog PC FYI. Another musical with many movers, but plenty of conventionals (esp. Pars and S4s) thrown in for good measure.

Thanks Piers, I knew you'd come up with the goods. Sorry to keep asking questions, but does the Hog sport an playback wing, or is it just the single unit?

Oh, and click here for another reply to the above post: :D
