DZA Technical Posted September 11, 2013 Posted September 11, 2013 Hi All, We have a small number of bespoke LED units which we use for exhibitions and installation. Until recently we have been supplying them via a 6pin XLR, so as to keep away from 5 pin and not get confused with DMX. However, I now need to make lots more extension cables, and the 6 pin XLR is so expensive!! Can anyone suggest a 5 or 6 pin connector which could be more cost effective? The cable needs to carry 5 cores - RGBW & COMMON, at 24V DC and up to 72W (apx 3amps). I'd also welcome Black cable suggestions... Thoughts!? Thankyou Dave

A standard RJ45 will carry 500mA on each pin, I've seen this used for LED before, not much help if you need 3amps on each colour and just one common though... Other options might be a 6 pin DIN (with locking ring ideally) rated at 4A 100V normally or I'm sure there's a 6 pin (laid out as two rows of 3) DC connector commonly used in vehicles and radio communications that might be suitable ?

oilyspark Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 When comparing connector prices, don't forget to allow for different assembly and repair times and expected lifespan. I often find alternatives to XLR take longer to wire and don't last as well, so the ultimate cost creeps up. I have used the micro Buccaneer for its IP rating and it is quite a versatile system but slower to fit and harder to service in the field.
