Digger65 Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 hi all I was recommended these as a good LED wash light for our venue (haven't had a chance to demo them but we did look at the Aura) just wondering how they compare? and if you had £ to spend right now on wash beam or spot movers which way would you go my thinking is a "cheapish" "knockabout" wash light permanently rigged I did kind of ask this before so apologies for the double post but it looks like we will be going ahead fairly imminently so it would be good to refreshlooking at sharpy too cheers D
soundiesam Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 the 301's are good bright fixtures had them on a Cruise Ship I worked on. The Aura is very small in comparison more of a Pin spot id say rather than a wash light. My other question for you would be what do you want to use them for?Sharpy wash would be a completly different ball game, sam
Digger65 Posted August 12, 2013 Author Posted August 12, 2013 understood, Sharpys are for back light much as our par can back light does now; colours and shapes with haze 8 or 10 x 301s as a Overhead /FOH wash that will be our go to colour wash although someone has just thrown Robe Pointe which I will look into also D
soundiesam Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 that sounds good to me.... ive got some pictures of the 301's doing wash duty on the ships somewhere ill dig them out for you sam
Joe Bleasdale Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 The Aura is very small in comparison more of a Pin spot id say rather than a wash light. Eh!? The Aura provides a similar wash as the 301. In fact, IMHO, it's better than the 301! Not only is it newer, the colours are a little better and the zoom is better to. I don't know which Aura you have been using but "pin spot" is not even remotely accurate, the 301 and the Aura are about the same size and give out a similar degree of wash and beam.. Aura is a "super 301" in my book. The 301 is still a real work horse, nice and bright, decent zoom range and well built. For a multipurpose fixture, it's a winner, I'd certainly recommend it! Thanks.
soundiesam Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 HAHA yes your right Joe I apologise I was thinking of the wrong fixture.... My appologies
DonkiDonki Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 HAHA yes your right Joe I apologise I was thinking of the wrong fixture.... My appologies I'm guessing you were thinking of the mac 101? As to fixture recommendations; I haven't used the Aura but I have used the Robe Robin 300 & 600 LED washes and find them to be brilliant work horses. The output is good and the zoom range is fantastic plus they do a decent range of whites for an LED. The only negative for me is the zoom is mechanically noisy when using it for fx.
landy Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 A few years back I compared the Mac 301 to a Robe 600 LED, I now own a dozen of the 600! I found the 301 had a halo and hot spot when doing pastels and were a bit streaky when close to a back drop. Yes the 600 is a little noisy on the zoom and at the time a couple of hundred more per unit but well worth it.
mac500 Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 Love the 300 and 600 robes. To through a spanner in the works I used a couple of the DTS Nick 600s and was pleasantly surprised. They had a really nice homogenised beam and a tight zoom.
Digger65 Posted August 15, 2013 Author Posted August 15, 2013 [hi thanks and hearing you on the Robe...however we have an in on a number of ex hire 301s at just over 1k per unit.. thanks D
mark_s Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 I've used the 301s on quite a few occasions - they're my 'go-to' general purpose small LED wash light and are readily available from most major suppliers. The yellow is unsurprisingly a bit crap, but otherwise they're a great little fixture. I also agree with Joe about the Aura, they're pretty much '301++'.
Young Johnstone Posted May 20, 2014 Posted May 20, 2014 If you've got them available at a decent price then you can't really go wrong with them!A hell of a lot more efficient and versatile than a punch of PAR's. (Eta, I've actually just noticed I've just dragged this thread back up. It seems to have popped up in my new content feed which is odd!Dohhh)
