Mini wireless RGB DMX units?

WTF

Hey,

not sure if this has already been discussed here so apologies if it has.

I am looking for some mini wireless rgb DMX units.

I have a few Astera light pods but I need something smaller and lighter but with a similar effect and that won't break the bank.

Any suggestions welcome??

American DJ seem to be getting in to the battery light thing:

to go fully wireless , use the IR control or with the budget theme

Add a few solar panels and instant `green` festival rig.

Cheers musht, def along the right lines of what I am after.

I guess I am looking for a tiny unit with built in receiver.

The unit needs to be about the size of a match box and be RGB.

Not sure if what I am looking for exists maybe I need to look at components?

Have a vague memory of table centerpiece lights that kind of matched the description, can`t find them now though.

Size and runtime are the competing factors, matchbox size dosen`t leave much space for batteries.

Might be easier to consider interfacing master control to DMX rather than each individual unit.

If I may highjack this thread....

Anybody have any experience of the American DJ, WiFly products? I'm thinking that if I power that little desk from a battery, I can put together a small system with no cables at all in a venue with no power. But would it be any good?

Obvious questions of how much light output, how long battery life, and what size matchbox...

This could be done easily with Arduino and a 10mm RGB LED and a Li-ion battery.

Hi all, I'm new here (but I've been lurking for years). Thought I'd chip in as I looked into something similar recently and discovered that there are some cheap (about £20) wireless DMX PCBs appearing on eBay. Shipped from China, naturally :)

They just need a 5V power supply and each one can be a receiver or a transmitter. So for each unit one of those, a DMX to RGB decoder, battery and LED might be an option.

I've no idea how reliable they are, but I can tell you the two I bought as a test are working nicely so far.

They certainly do. I think mine are green rather than red (they're now fitted inside a couple of light fixtures so I can't easily check), but yes they look very similar. Intriguing photo - do you mind me asking what those units are?

Not at all. The one on the left is a LED driver for fitting into a costume, drives a string of WS1308 LEDs, and the one on the right is a PWM 12VDC dimmer, which powered a streetlight on wheels. On the PCB is a RS485 transceiver chip, and a propellor processor, the Spin Stamp.

Heres the other sides.

Sounds great. Although not for a costume (I do wedding lighting rather than stage), I'm working on a similar project using WS2801 LEDs.

Have you found the wireless DMX PCBs to be reliable? I'm tempted to buy a few more but have been holding off in case they start misbehaving.

Yep, no problems at all. I also have a pair of the boxed units with LCD displays from the same manufacturer, which these units happily interwork with.

These units area bit odd: there is no setting of transmit or receive, they receive mess that get DMX input, upon which they transmit...

That's great, thanks for the info. Looks like I'll be getting a few more.

I thought it was odd too that there's no way to specify transmit or receive, but the auto detection does seem to work OK so it's not a problem.
