S&L Posted May 11, 2013 Posted May 11, 2013 a guitarist friend of mine emailed me today asking for some help identifying a pair of speakers - he is having a music room clear out but I'm not sure what to make of them. 15" main speaker with I'm told no markings on the speaker at all and no markings at all on the back of the cabinet. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/a579/hdtomlinson/941547_10151620712176900_816025241_n_zpsff94b728.jpg any one any clues?
J Pearce Posted May 11, 2013 Posted May 11, 2013 The manufacturer is Ohm, but they're not ones I recognise. Perhaps send the photo to Ohm and ask for their assistance?

Simon Lewis Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 I have been selling Ohm boxes for quite a few years, and cannot recall ever having seen these. If they are production copies, they would have details on the connector plate, and I think that around the time they introduced that logo, they had the Ohm name on the handles as well? Give Ohm a call, and let us know the answer!
dwright2104 Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 Quite likely copies, as I was asked to get spares for some speakers in a pub, which where cabinets marked with that Ohm logo, but with little other marking's. I contacted Ohm and they said they never made speakers that looked anything like the ones I was trying to identify, I eventually opened up some of them and they all had different looking crossovers, and different models of drivers, some being Celestion drivers and others being Eminence drivers.
TonyMitchell Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 Are they a guitar cab (I note the OP indicated they belong to a guitarist) as all I can see is a LF and a mid driver, nothing on high end.I was unaware Ohm ever made guitar cabs... my money's on them being homebrew with the "Ohm" badges for decoration.
S&L Posted May 12, 2013 Author Posted May 12, 2013 thanks for your input so far guys. passing back to my friend now and will post if I get anything further.
Simon Lewis Posted May 13, 2013 Posted May 13, 2013 Ohm have made guitar cabs. They've also made a lot of stuff in grey, and the cabs above look almost good enough to be real Ohm boxes. I'm guessing it's a 15" plus co-axial. They could be homebrews masquerading as Ohm boxes. I'm aware that the MR228 was copied quite extensively for a while.
S&L Posted May 13, 2013 Author Posted May 13, 2013 I copied on all the insightful replies above and my guitarist friend contacted ohm who said: This IS one of our old units, the PS-500. 15” and a co-axial 12” Tayden drivers. As it suggests rated at 500w. It was originally a powered speaker but towards the end of it’s run the amp section was removed and left passive. so mystery solved. By the way did everyone else know that ohm were part of Idex? I have never heard Idex budget speakers but I'm curious now!
bruce Posted May 13, 2013 Posted May 13, 2013 A few years ago, I picked up a job lot of kit at an auction, for very little money. Included was a pair of Ohm RW3 speakers, and a pair of the equivalent Idex ones. Other than one having jacks and one speakons, they were remarkably similar, both in terms of looks and sounds. But remember the Ohm RW range were carpet covered boxes aimed at disco dave. They're probably a bit above skytec, but still in the "hundred quid a pair second hand" market - which is what I got when I ebayed them. Not in the same league as the Ohm professional products.
Simon Lewis Posted May 13, 2013 Posted May 13, 2013 I'm just mending a pair of RW3's! Certainly not their top product, but they were sold in great numbers via Electrovision...
