PHPCore Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 Hello, I'm new on this forum, and I'l would be happy if I found some help. I'm resident dj on a club, and from time to time we invite other dj's to play here, but they gain up the volume and I'm scared they can brake the bass. The signal audio for bass it comes from Pioneer DJM 750 Mixer ==> Behringer DCX2496 Processor ==> AMPS ==> Bass. I see the option Limit on DCX2496 and some how I figured it out how works. But I'm stuck on Release Time option. it have an option from 20ms - 4000ms.What is the release time? what value of ms is good for my bass? Can someone here could help me out and explain me how this works so I wont brake something. Thanks
timtheenchanteruk Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 A limiter is usually a fast attack/release time ie it limits the sound and stops it going over a certain threshold, with the bass of DJ related material, is tuaully the bass that hits the limit first, but you need it to let go quickly, otherwist the next bit of the music will also be limited. TBH, the limit shouldn't be used to make it "sound good" its a tool to stop you going over a preset limit, frequently used to avoid damage to speakers, or to avoid the system exceeding a preset "volume". using a limiter at all will affect the sound, and can be down right annoying if the audio is being limited all the time. personally, pre-recorded music is compressed enough anyway, so a compressor wouldn't be needed in your situation IMO
laolu Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 It might be worthwhile to check whether the limiter limits the "whole" signal or the bass only. If the latter is the case, I would apply it on the bass, as described, quick in, quick out, and let the rest of the signal pass uncompressed, because, as tim pointed out, it is already compressed anyways. PHPCore Posted May 9, 2013 Author Posted May 9, 2013 Only bass I want to limit, coz when they dj's goes crazy the AMP clip goes red... What is better to use? the Limiter with release time or Dynamic EQ with attack and release time (where I can set what part of EQ to cut when the gain goes crazy)
