projection surface for front/rear use

Hi everyone,

I've been asked to provide 3x 6' x 4'6" projection screens for a flown installation. Its an arts project and they'd like to have screens that can be seen from either side simultaneously.

Has anybody found a material that will do an adequate job both of front and rear projection at the same time, preferably on a fairly tight budget?

Thanks in advance!

You get a fairly good image on the back of normal rear-project material such as used on a fastfold screen... though obviously it is mirrored, I presume they have thought of that.

Even white bedsheets work quite well, but if you can see the projector lens through the screen you get a bad hot spot. If the screens are high up this may not be a problem.

Ambient lighting is going to be your enemy here, do you have control of that?

Yes, I'm a little unsure of the lighting options available to me - I might opt for a few floorcans to create "mood" and reduce (ie switch off!) some of the house lighting. I think (hope!) we're in a poorly lit area indoors from what I've been told! I hope mirroring won't be an issue - if it is, I'll simply move screens to the edges of the area and front project! Projectors and screens are being flown, so hotspots may be less of an issue.

Thanks for your thoughts!

has white bedsheets seriously been suggested ? for F***cks sake. and lets use grannys old radiogramme for the sound and some table lamps for the lighting.

Rosco Twinwhite or harkness front and rear cost about the same as sheets and hold an image fairly evenly on both sides without the fire risk. rosco comes in 1.4 and 2.8m widths so if you are clever with your sizes you should be able to get your sizes out with minimal waste whoever supplies you with gel will get in in for you,

If you need a screen, get a screen, its no more expensive than all the other stuff that's light coloured and thin but its actually fit for purpose.

I'm inclined to agree - bedsheets are for sleeping on, not projecting! and in reality the cost of the twin white surface isn't so scary - probably about the same as hiring a fastfold in the first place, but with the double sided benefits. I'd been led to believe it would cost hundreds - it was tens!

Thanks for your help... and do you have a phonograph or maybe some wax cylinders I could use - the ear trumpet's not as effective as it used to be!

I'm sorry you're offended by my low budget suggestions... but it depends whether "tight budget" means £50 or £500.

I've had to do arty projections on bed sheets before, and it does work.

+1...there's no harm in throwing ideas out there. Whilst I'm (and I'm sure Tim) is not advocating this idea for a technician/show/budget that should know/be able to afford better, there are some situations where it might be suitable way of making something happen.

In what way does it "work" ? you can see an image on it, but the fact that the image on the reverse is much darker than the face, the viewing angles are totally different both sides, that the hotspots dreadful and that the slightly open weave means that theres a whole load of spill through it. Combine that with the fact that its almost impossible to get a bedsheet evenly tensioned or the simple fact that as its not inherently fireproof its got no place in a public venue.

The proper stuff at the sizes suggested will cost buttons and you can make a screen for under 50 quid, id not suggest touring it for years and if budgets allow there are less labour intensive off the shelf solutions, but you will get a screen that performs as well as anything you can buy, and better than you can hire as its highly unlikely that you will find anyone with fastfolds with twin view surfaces for hire, you can buy them special order, but they are rare.

Honestly screen stock doesn't cost much- if your sizes work out, Rosco is great as you can buy it by the inch like gel and you can get the right stuff for the job,

Bedsheets?

really?

This is very bad advice.

you can project on your grandma's knickers for all I care, but they are not ok for use in a venue unless they have been FIREPROOFED.
