Building security

Credit card fraud thread kind of hijacked, not before reminded that a CC over the phone is cardholder not present though.

Had an attempted break in near my workshop 3 weeks ago, 3 years almost to the day since last one, think its school holiday`s, in same period such a high profile target as a car wash was also broken into.

Whhat have learned so far.

PIR floodlights, have 9 around the area they are great for welcoming you to base on a wet and windy night, loading and unloading and if your a ned they`re great for getting the bolt cutters lined up right.

Signs, for CCTV on commercial area they are mandatory, print one with a phone number , laminate it and stick them up visible from publically accessible areas.

Signs for security companies/patrols also deter some, warnings of razor wire and anticlimb paint even if not actually fitted may be appropriate.

CCTV, Network DVRs are dirt cheap, camera resolution has climbed and costs dropped, CAT5 baluns make wiring a complete doddle, even if not used in evidence , knowing the ned out there, knows that his picture is in the hands of people who would like to have a full and frank discussion with him about tool theft , really is priceless.

RED IR rings appear to attract spiders and neds, current intruders snapped one camera off its mount, IR rings in drain pipe look just like cameras after dark.

Hidden cameras , pinhole, doorviewer , just without a `here I am` IR ring lipstick cam, worth fitting at least one.

Padlocks, choose a make and model, look it up on Youtube, then increase your budget to something that`s stronger than using couple of cable ties, cheap locks can be very vunerable.....

Abloy, Squire SS , Ingersoll are decent.

Hasps, great padlock but door hasp made from melted down Dinky toys, at least the cops can use the parts to match tool marks :-(

Lock boxes , where padlock is boxed in apart from key entry are an excellent idea, leaves less area exposed to bolt cutters or large levers.

Mortice lock in door means defeating padlock still won`t gain access.

Padbars, which go right across door are a good idea.

Weak hinges or doors than can lift off their hinges from outside are a bad idea.

Alarms, something that makes a noise was cops top tip, neds don`t mind the lights but things that break the silence of night are liable to make them run off for a bit, not uncommon for them to multiple trip an alarm till it gets put down as false alarm and then return though.

any other tips?

and of course anti-trip lights, illuminated kerbs and danger signs telling people smashed glass can cut your fingers - or the police might be too scared to get out of the car - no wonder they seem to fight crime with the telephone nowadays - chasing criminals in the dark is too risking in this part of the country!

Can also be combined with multiple strobe lights designed to flash out of sync to disorientate any intruder (and hope they're not an epilepsy sufferer

Can be combined with what looks like multiple Atomics to really disorientate them.

Yep, that's exactly the system.... Also the smoke itself contains a chemical marker, anyone exposed to it can be identified by police.

That said with multiple atomics flashing through it I think most of the time the police would find them still in the building, lying in the middle of the floor somewhere...

Could add in some very loud sfx... ;)

Not been owned by Martin for years - When JEM was independant they and smoke-cloak had an un-official partnership / shared ideas and the merger grew out of that. There was a management/brains buyout several years ago and now smokecloak is a stand-alone business that happens to have danish backers but which is completely separate to Martin/JEM in every way.

Always seemed to me that the way gear rusts when left in air is a shame, far better to store all your stuff in a container under slight positive pressure with 100% N2, cuts down on losses to ahh 'rust' you see.

Eventually the surviving neds might learn to pay attention to the very small "Caution 100% N2 atmosphere" sign on the door.

If doing the strobes and smoke thing don't forget that random bursts of white noise as from venting a compressor air recever thru a nozzle add a certain something at ~130dB or so, a 2 inch pilot operated valve straight off an air recever to atmosphere at 100psi or so is quite loud (Don't forget to bolt the tank down to handle the reaction loads).

Regards, Dan.

Dog?

Or recording of said dog...

I always felt that the problem with a warehouse dog was finding one that would chew the face off a burglar but would know not to attack customers or casuals who drop in at odd times.

...or indeed would attack a few selected customers :P

Ooops - did I say that out loud? :P

SmokeCloak...

Or a pile of Le Maitre coloured smokes. You'd be surprised how effective they are if you use 40' containers for your store ;)

potential with containers to take the whole box...

That might be a risk with empty containers but having had to hire a crane to move mine to a new location whilst still containing just internal fixtures and fitting I can say with some certainty that a Hiab ain't going to manage.
