stottyboy Posted April 16, 2013 Posted April 16, 2013 Hello all, Is there a way to turn off the DMX output from MagicQ PC or from my MagicDMX dongle? I want to to be able to turn it off so the lights I'm using will run in sound to light mode automatically when I don't want to use DMX with them. All the best, James
stottyboy Posted April 16, 2013 Author Posted April 16, 2013 I could do that, but it needs to be a quick, electronic if possible, switch over. I've thought about building a switch to disconnect pins, but is there a way to cut all data on the line? Unplug the DMX cable from the dongle? Josh
vbm Posted April 16, 2013 Posted April 16, 2013 In the Setup window, in the View DMX I/O window, you can choose to enable/disable each DMX universe in the Status column. That should do it, judging by the way it took two of us about fifteen minutes to work out why no DMX was coming out of the desk before we saw that the relevant universe was disabled... Martin.
stottyboy Posted April 16, 2013 Author Posted April 16, 2013 Hi Martin - Good suggestion, but I'm still able to change DMX outputs and control lights when it's set to 'disable'. I can't see anyway to apply new settings. In the Setup window, in the View DMX I/O window, you can choose to enable/disable each DMX universe in the Status column. Russ83 Posted April 16, 2013 Posted April 16, 2013 You can normally set a DMX value on the fixtures control channel that activates sound to light. Just find this value in the manual for each fixture and record them into a cue, record the normal DMX mode into the next cue and put it on a fader. Changing the control channel normally overides all the other channels so you should hopefully turn sound to light on and off just by pressing > on the fader you recorded the cue stack to.(hope that makes sense...been a long day!)

It looks like you're right. I've just plugged my ChamSys Full MagicDMX interface into my laptop here and disabling the DMX universe appears to make no difference to the activity of the LEDs in the USB end of the dongle, although I don't have any real lights available to plug into it to check. Section 4.4.1 of the current version of the ChamSys manual confirms this, the enabled/disabled field is relevant only to older software versions, which is what I must have been using on the console in question. I would suggest a call to the good people at ChamSys, they will be able to tell you straight away whether there is an easy way to do what you need to do. And if they do, please let us know! Martin.
