kev_b Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 The company I used to work for had a small PA system with 4 x Mackie SRM 450 v2 active 12" speakers and 2 x Mackie SWA 1501 Subwoofers, the system always sounded pretty good especially for just a few speakers. I was hoping to buy myself a similar system but just looked at prices and it comes in at £5500 which is more than I want to spend and much more than I was expecting. I just wondered if anyone has any suggestions as to a comparable system which wouldn't cost quite so much. Cheers
Samwise Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 I don't think they make the SRM1501 anymore, the newer equivalent would probably be the HD1501 A quick glance at a well established retailers price list gives me £3278 for 4 x SRM-450 and 2 x HD1501 Shame they're terrible rubbish (Subjective opinion) for £5500 I wonder if you couldn't go down the QSC active route, much better. (Subjective opinion) All the best.

(Subjective opinion) Also RCF ART or even NX series or HK Audio Premium Pro or EV ZXA. Standard questions apply. How big a space are you trying to fill and what is the program material.
kev_b Posted April 15, 2013 Author Posted April 15, 2013 I'd rather spend around the £2500 mark if possible for a similar set up but then again I know its the same old thing where 'you get what you pay for'. The system would be generally for playing pre-recorded stuff so not really any live stuff and would be used in a variety of locations such as shopping centres, car show rooms etc with the possibility of the odd outside pa.
Thomaswgrey Posted April 16, 2013 Posted April 16, 2013 Hi, A good friend of mine brought some mackie srm 450 v2's two years ago and last year got the matching srm 1801 subs. Within the month that he brought the subs they both packed in so sent them back to mackie, same happens again with one of the subs soon after so sent it back again. They have held out since however last week one of his srm 450 v2's tweeter packed in. He is now hiring my electro voice live X system till he decides what to replace the mackie system with. In my eyes Mackie isn't what it used to be as they where esentually co designed with RCF.
Stuart91 Posted April 17, 2013 Posted April 17, 2013 I wonder if you couldn't go down the QSC active route, much better. (Subjective opinion) I've been impressed by what I've seen of the QSC active boxes. I was seriously contemplating taking some into hire stock, but the deal-breaker for me is the sheer amount of controls and inputs available on the back of each cabinet. The potential for disaster in the hands of a novice hire customer put me off. How are the company buying the boxes going to use them? If they are getting moved around and set up by non-technical staff, I'd strongly recommend going for something as simple as possible.
i_hate_fisicks Posted April 17, 2013 Posted April 17, 2013 I've heard good things about the new Yamaha active stuff, which I don't believe is very expensive. The Thomann TheBox Pro Achat stuff is also very good for the money. Nice wooden boxes. You could have 2 tops and 2 subs for about £1300. Why do you want 4 tops?
kev_b Posted April 17, 2013 Author Posted April 17, 2013 I only mentioned the 2 tops because that's what I used to use at the events company I used to work for and to me it sounded pretty good. I assumed that in a big area such as a shopping centre, conference room or an outside area that it might be better to have 4 speakers so they could be spread out a bit. Obviously I don't know so much about all this sound stuff hence why I'm here and very open to any advice people might have.

Correct. Stick to your guns here - in wide areas 2 pairs will normally be a necessity to get a nice even spread.
