darkgate Posted April 13, 2013 Posted April 13, 2013 HI, I was wondering if any of you could give me any information on this. I was watching the live streaming of Coachella and during the set by Blur I noticed what appears to be a parabolic mic behind the amps pointing out across the stage. Could somebody let me know what this may be being used for? Thanks MatthewScreen grab of the mic just noticed its not a dish but a deflector for a mic the brass section that came on later in the set.
Doug Siddons Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 Your right a lot of brass players use something like that as a "monitor"
GaryNattrass Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 I've seen such perspex deflectors used on brass sections but they are probably more about cutting down spill to other mics than getting a tighter sound from the instrument as a brass section can put out some serious DB's.
Chappie Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 Yes, we use them to make life a bit more tolerable for the musicians that are in harms way of a brass section. The ones we use are made by Clearsonic, the same company that make drum screens and other isolation accessories.
PeterT Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 I have it on good authority (from a trumpeter) that these discs also act as a bit of a monitor for the brass player as it reflects some of the sound back at the player so they can hear themselves a bit more.
livelifetotheverymax Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 I imagine they probably help minimise reflections from the bell causing feedback as well.
