Studio Storage

I have an educational recording studio which I am looking to tidy up the storage in. I have a 'corner' which is currently used for storage of around 40 XLR cables, a dozen stands, two dozen mics, and other bits like DI boxes and headphones, and it looks a mess.

I am looking for ideas about how people might have sorted out storage for any of these items. The space in the corner is about 6ft x 4ft and I'm looking for a cabinet or any kind of system that might tidy some of these things up.

How do you work your cable & mic storage in this kind of situation?

I set up the above system in the studio at my old place.

Works beautifully. In education build the pipes open bottomed and with access to the bottoms to remove the inevitable crisp packets etc.

Best price for 110mm soil pipe is from ToolStation here - £17.17 for 2x3m including delivery.

you will be able to get soil pipe cheaper than tool station if you go to a local builders yard explain its for education and get their best price, jut make sure you ask for black pipe which is commonly used for storm water drainage rather than sewage

At the risk of sounding like a broken record (anybody else old enough to actually understand that reference?) I've never found a better solution than the pegs/pipes/lock box scenario. For the pipes, build a wooden frame to hold them neatly and rigidly-lots of ways to do that depending on the space and shape available.

If you have several different standard lengths of cable, a bit of colour coding on the pegs to match a similar coloured mark on the cable (male end so the bit that plugs into the mic is presentable) can be useful.

I get the broken..broken...broken..broken..recor..recor...roecor...rence...:o) or should that be a scratched record.

I use stacking plastic crates with the fixed split interlocking tops for most of my kit as it allows different lengths and items to be stored in colour coded boxes, it also allows them to be carried to rigging areas or in the car.

Does that matter ? I guess it does if it has been used but one can tell right away.

Should you use grey pipe for your "crappy" old mic stands though?

Thanks guys

The space available is 6'6w x 2'6d x 3'6h and into that I'm hoping to fit storage for around 40 cables, 10ish stands, 2 dozen mics, 6 pairs of headphones.

I'll try some different ways of arranging cabinets etc to see if I can draw up a custom cabinet to make with possibly some pipe storage, and a couple of either drawers or boxes, and some pegs I guess for cabling.

Are there any places selling mic/cable storage cabinets off the shelf, or does anyone have any photos of any neat storage setups to get some ideas from?

We have mass storage on the other side of the building with plenty of flightcases / crates / walls full or storage pegs for most of our kit, but this hopefully a neater solution for within a recording studio / classroom environment.

you’ll be surprised how much cable they'll eat up

custom cabinet to make with possibly some pipe storage
,

4 lengths of pipe in a square, held together with gaffa tape,or if your wanting posh slide them into a lorry inner tube

For mics "borrow" a small filling cabinet

I use the brackets for hanging basket plants for cable (just the bracket as a peg, no basket) Iv got about 40 mic cables and a few 4 way looms on 4, you'd probably get the 5 headphones on one two- you can attach that to the wall at the head height of the shortest person likley to need them and this probably allows room for mic and stand storage underneath.
