djgeorgef
Hi all! I have a 4 x 24v 1amp lighting circuits I'd like to control via DMX! Can someone point me in the direction of a 4 channel dimmer that would do this, or maybe even have one for sale?! I've looked around but tbh I'm not really sure what I'm looking for as its not a led circuit but filament bulbs? Thanks in advance
adam2
Might be easier to use a standard dimmer, and a dimmable transformer with a 24 volt output.
Speakercon
There may be something more appropriate others suggest, but I thought I'd chime in. I have used these in the past: http://store.lightor.../cmdedcca2.html 16 Channel, 1-60V DC control and DMX controllable. Not bad for £65 Only problem is you have to order from the US, though the postage was quite reasonable when I ordered them.
dbuckley
If it isn't a mobile application (ie batteries) and they are just standard 12V filament lamps, then use transformers and a mains dimmer, its just so much less hassle. The venerable NJD DP1000 analogue four channel dimmer could be rewired to dim from an external low voltage AC source, I wonder if the new DMX controlled equivalent was designed with the same forethought? maeterlinck
Do you need AC or DC for your lamps? DC - use a suitably rated LED / PWM dimmerAC - use a standard dimmer with wire wound transformer or dimming transformer.
djgeorgef
Hi thanks for the quick replys! It's 24v AC! I had already thought of using 240v ones with a transformer but as I would have to buy a dimmer pack anyway wondered if there was a dedicated one on the market! Although that light o Rama one looks like a handy bit of kit!
ocfe
Check out Chromlech Gleamerhttp://www.chromlech.fr/pages/en/products/low-voltage-lighting.php also check Mode Lighting DMX ET - call them to see if they do a 24v versionhttp://www.modelighting.com/copy/photos/DMX-ET.pdf
musht
Used to be common requirement for installed rope lights like stair nosings, sure NJD or Anytronics had option on some dimmers to feed dimmed output with 24V A.C. Drop 1.4V across the triac, which will run warm, means if lamps are rated to 24V exactly, will look a bit yellow even at 100%,will also increase their life span by a large margin. If load will tolerate D.C. most incan lamps will , switch mode PSU feeding LED driver will be more compact and run cooler.

Although that light o Rama one looks like a handy bit of kit! Even if you can find a dedicated 24 volt dimmer, this wont avoid the need for a transformer.A 24 volt dimmer will normally need a 24 volt input, so you will still need transformer(s) A point to remember is that when "on full" , dimmers normaly lose about 1 volt between input ant output. With a 240 volt supply this is trivial and normaly ignored, but with only 24 volts input the loss is over 4% and may result in noticeable dimming even when turned up full. J Pearce
I remember seeing something at PLASA that had multiple low voltage dimmed outs. I think it was in one of the awards areas, probably a bit pricey, but maybe worth investigating?
dmxtothemax
The easiest option is to use a four pack dimmer,And 24v transformers, if there incandesant lampsthen AC will be just fine. But remember not all dimmers are happy running inductive loads like trannys.Check before you buy, some will, some won't. Also not all iron cored trannys are happy running off dimmers, (they tend to overheat). Some electronic one's will work happily if dimmer compatable. rogers
you could use a LED manager (for led strips etc) and a 24V powersupply (jb systems do a manager with a24 volt 300W powersupply)
djgeorgef
Thanks all! I've gone for the dimmer and transformer set up! Not as neat and tidy but will be ideal for what I need! Thanks all for the info and ideas! Cheers
djgeorgef
Update! I've found a cheap anytronics dp805 on eBay! Again you need two power supply's, one mains and one low voltage but it is a lot neater and works a treat! Thanks for all your input!
