benweblight
as our schools rig is not too good, we hire in most of the rig for major productions. for a while now we have been hiring a mixture of silhouette and freedom profiles for foh, our hire company has advised us to change the silhouette profiles for source four juniors in our order. should we? are they significantly better optically/brighter than the silhouettes? ianl
yes yes yes yes and yes I have both sil 30s and source 4 jnr zooms and the jnrs are so much better, lighter, smaller, brighter, sexier, better shutters, better for gobos, the only thing the sils are better for is doorstops as our schools rig is not too good, we hire in most of the rig for major productions. for a while now we have been hiring a mixture of silhouette and freedom profiles for foh, our hire company has advised us to change the silhouette profiles for source four juniors in our order. should we? are they significantly better optically/brighter than the silhouettes?<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

MarcT
yes yes yes yes and yes I have both sil 30s and source 4 jnr zooms and the jnrs are so much better, lighter, smaller, brighter, sexier, better shutters, better for gobos, the only thing the sils are better for is doorstops ...and the S4 Jnr is 575Watts compared with the Silhouette 30 1k/1.2kW, and produces more light. When I was at uni (some 11 years ago now), the majority of profiles in our lantern stock were Sil 30s, both the axial & base down types. I thought they were great, (and at the time they were) although the axials would get through lamps like they were going out of fashion... ...but as Iain says the technology has moved on since. SceneMaster
I would have to agree with all of the above go for the S4 juniors if you can spend that little bit more on hire… Sil though are still great fixtures and the fact that they are still great years after they have been made is some testament to there design. Technology has moved on producing better light but for a school they still produce above standard light… especially if the school is used to P23s!!! I personally know how hard it is to balance a school lighting budget and I would go for a the S4s but it depends if on the show, budget and the lights required… if I need twelve profiles of decent quality and I have the choice between hiring 8 S4s or 12 Sils for my budget I am going to choose the Sils (I don’t know the current hire price average for these models of light at the moment but you get the idea)… but yep S4s are great go for it!!! ;)
Bryson
The only reason really to go with the Sils would be to more carefully match colour temperature. I'm assuming the Jrs have the same CT as the normal S4s, so they could look "bluer" than the rest of your old rig.
