AndyJones
Hey guys, I'm after some LED Tubes (Around 50 in total)The main plan is to be able to pixel map them, or run video through them, so something with individual LED control would be an advantage. It would be nice to be able to use them for basic wall washes and up-lighters as well though. I have found these, which are cheap and cheerful and look as though they could do the job. Does anyone have any experience of these units? Even better does anyone have any near by that I can look at? Does anyone have any recommendations on other products that are out there that would do the same thing? Budget would ideally be less than £150 per tube. lite_lad
Hi Andy, you might be better off looking at battens if you want to be able to use them to wash a wall as the large amount of diffusion on tubes means youll just get a glow around the fixture whereas a batten would throw the light up the wall. But battens would still give you the flexibility of using them as 'eye candy' much as I presume youd want to use the tubes for... as for which ones on that budget im afraid im not going to be much help but you should defiantely consider some battens! andyparcans
agree with above, the tubes are diffused and you dont get much effect for you money.there are several types we have used, the Mil-Tec battens are ok and good value, they also come with a barn dorr to enable them to be used as cyc's/ up lighters.also look at the showtec units again approx the same. hope that helps
Ashley R
I would grab LED Bar's just with the 10mm LED's if you need something cheap cheap. and throw I think it was kitchen waxed paper over the top to soften the LED's/ make the visual look more impressive. ChrisBogg
Show tec do a good one. http://www.highlite.nl/silver.econtent/catalog/highlite/entertainment_products/dmt/media_gear/displays/pixelstrip_p25 Not sure about the eurolite ones but we get better support from highlite than from our suppliers of eurolite futurelight etc. Chris
smalljoshua
The Pixel Strip is alright, but not directly DMX controlable (Klingnet only) and not bright enough for uplighting IMO. Yes, with a pitch of 40mm it's closer to being a video product than lighting, but not quite versatile enough for my liking. The Showtec Pixel Bar 12 is a much higher pitch product (85mm) but has much brighter LEDs, direct DMX in, good for uplighting (with a simple RGB mode) and able to do pixel mapping too. http://www.highlite.nl/silver.econtent/catalog/highlite/entertainment_products/showtec/deco_designlight/led_colorpaint_bars/pixel_bar_12 Josh
mac500
Chauvet do the quad battens with individual pixel control.
norty303
If you want to run video then pixel pitch is going to be your prime concern. Not much comes close at the budget end to the Eurolite unit, but you sacrifice being able to use it for other things. I'm in a similar position of wanting something versatile, but needing as much resolution as possible. I've come to the following point... Showtec Pixelbar 12 if I want to spend to your limit, has 12 3W tri-led pixels, all individually addressable. With your quantities you'll pick them up for under £150ea I'd have thought. Showtec LED Light Bar 8 which has 8 addressable pixels using 10mm LED's, with a reasonably good arrangement of the LEDs for even colour, and slightly more red LEDs to compensate for their reduced brightness to the eye, something I haven't seen in other bars at that price. These are around £80-£90ea retail in singles. All of the other bars from Gigatec, eurolite, Stairville, etc have something wrong with them, either not enough resolution, not individually addressable pixels, poor layout of the LEDs (blocky), etcShowtec also seem to think a bit more about mounting options. P.S. I have no affiliation with Showtec, they just seem to produce the 2 most suitable products in the price range, that meet the specs.
TREV-IOM
What about an ICELED UFO Tube, they can be controlled by DMX via a DMX Bridge. Video mapping will not really be possible though due to the pixel size. http://www.litewave.co.uk/prod_cat/P_iceled-ufo-led-tubes-v2_95_iceled_8.html
