david.elsbury
Try this list of previous topics for a start, it's something we've covered many times before. https://www.google.co.nz/search?q=lighting+design+site%3Ablue-room.org.uk&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a David
Ah Clem
Have you looked at Capture Polar? They have several "Editions" starting with their free Student Edition.
light-man
I use LXFree on Mac. I also use it on Windows 7 occasionally. It's fine for producing some CAD drawings - Pretty decent if you get to grips with it.
LXbydesign
Yup. Another +1 for LXFree on a Mac (or PC) Its perfectly good enough to produce adequate lighting plans at a basic / mid level.
ltully
Look at capture. I had Wysiwyg but have now moved over to use capture for most of my pre vis.
J Pearce
Define 'design package', do you mean drafting, visualisation, paperwork management or something else? I'm another user of LXFree, though I tend to build the venues in a full blown CAD package first if I don't already have a decent model.I find it quicker than WYSIWYG, which is the only other package I've used for more than one show, other than A3 paper, scale ruler and stencil, which works brilliantly.
