light-man
Hi All, Sorry if this has already been touched on, the search returned no results! I'm interested in buying a small PA system to compliment my small lighting rig (16 LED 64s and some PAR 64's, nothing too special) for the odd gig here and there when people are after more than just a freelancer. A few very good friends of mine are freelance noise guys so I wouldn't have to bother about that side of things (Mixing live audio is definitely not my strong point in the industry!). At current, I simply hire/borrow a rig when required. I don't think it'd ever have to cater for more than around 400 people. In my regular jobs, I use mainly Adlib Audio (a local firm, just down the road!) and Logic Systems rigs, and I also regularly use L'Acoustics, CODA and D&B, however I don't quite have a the budget to stretch that far (yet!). I have been looking at the ELX range from EV, has anyone had any experiences with these? The reason I'm looking at them is that I use EV equipment regularly, which I like and I've had no problems with, but these particular speakers are also a decent upper-market brand name in a lower price area. Any feedback or alternatives would be a great help. Cheers,Si.
smalljoshua
I own 4 EV ELX112, regularly use them on their own at FOH, with subs (not the ELX range) and as Monitors. They're nice little boxes, honky at 200Hz, prone to feedback with a range of mics at 2.2kHz and quite lively on the HF. Not that any of that is a major issue! I power them from either the Thomann TSA4-700 or QSC RMX2450 amps. I don't like the 118 Subs, they are lacking, heavy and not loud enough. I use Studiospares' Auditorium Range (the first ones) along side for subs. Josh
light-man
Thanks for the feedback, Josh! I'm actually quite glad you've mentioned the Auditorium range, as that was my plan B should anyone give any negative feedback on the EV kit that I was initially looking at. From what I've read on the forums, the Auditorium range is fantastic for the money, and it's definitely something I'm considering. I'd rather not mix manufacturers though if I can help it, so it would probably be all Studiospares if I was to go for SS.
smalljoshua
I must point out, I use the original auditorium range for the subs. I haven't heard the old tops or any of the MK2 stuff. In theory it should be just as good, both the original and new range are Soundking OEM products. Josh
haymere
Pete and Tom at Stagetex in Speke have ELX if you want to try some. Just say Mark sent you.
TimmyP1955
Buy the cheapest thing that your suppliers have in stock, so you can supplement your system if need be.
deitel
We have the EV Sx300's running off the EV Q66 amps at one of the venues I work at and they do the job fairly well (as monitors on smaller gigs and as a PA for the bar). Like a previous poster said they're a bit prone to feedback around 2k and lively on the top, but they're good value for money.
light-man
Thanks for all your input - I'll be looking into this properly in the near future, and hopefully making a decision! Deitel,I currently use 2 Sx300s myself actually in one of the venues where I work, they're not bad - we tend to use them for Monitors when the main rig is out or as top boxes for speech/background music jobs. If the ELX range sounds similar to them, then I'd be more than happy with that.
