ramdram Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 So, we're all agreed then, we all went off on a tangent (groan) as we do and the DoF stuff, whilst QI, has nothing at all to do with the video projection, which is simply "2D", as we call it. And the claim of 4D is simply hype because it is betterer than 3D...and 4 is a higher number than 3.
JimWebber Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 Which might be said to support Einstein...in that if you missed a cue in a show then you can't go back in time for a second go. But you can rerun the cue in rehearsals...crikey I think theatre HAS discovered time travel. Yes, you can go "back in time" to try the cue again, and yes, theatre has discovered time travel in this respect... Unfortunately the pub across the road from the stage door hasn't yet discovered time travel. If the tech over-runs because of the aforementioned cue, then even the combined talents of Mr. Einstein, Mr. Hawkins, and Mr. Newton still can't move last orders back by 10 minutes... Jim

Seano Posted December 22, 2012 Posted December 22, 2012 Absolutely. And don't get me started on those that call 'Pepper's Ghost' a 'hologram'. Couldn't agree more, but the Advertising Standards Authority decided they don't have a problem with it: clicky
Andrew Edwards Posted January 2, 2013 Posted January 2, 2013 The other confusion is that Disney et al have confused dimensions with senses. Yes its 3D vision to which they add the senses of touch and smell. The only thing missing is taste unless they can find a way of delivering the elusive 6th sense! The sense of hearing is already present of course and that in itself can be multi dimensional. 2 = stereo etc. Ah now senses. That's different. There are certainly more than 5 and if I remember my QI correctly 20 odd. How about knowing exactly where your limbs are or that you are upside down. It is a little harder to come up with a punchy word or phrase to convey this however...Take simpsons 3D which is the old BttF ride at Universal re dressed. There are no 3D glasses but you do get a very real sense of moving through Springfield due to the careful matching of the curvature of the screen to the [perspective] 3D content. It's billed as 3D but isn't really compared to all the other 3D rides/experiences. It's Universal that has come up with some slightly suspect descriptions (for those in the know) for their product having always played second fiddle to Disney. Whilst there are many great things at the Disney Parks, Universal has some of the best technically. For me, the key is expectation. The Floridian Parks are all about pretence. 'Let's go for a jolly sail around Amityville harb... oh goodness me a Shark' (sadly this is now closed). Even in Disney Paris they don't have this; there is no question you are going on a ride. I think there are always going to be over-simplified marketing-y ways to convey stuff to the general public and I don't really have problem with this. However, it is the continuation of the theme by other folks that takes it much further away from reality that starts to get silly. Peppers ghost = hologram... ok count to 10 and it will be all right...1...2... The musion addition to Disaster (formerlly earthquake) at universal is pretty amazing though. The projection of Christopher Walken wandering about interacting with physical objects on stage is superb. It is only the fact that Mr. Walken would not be live that gives it away, if they had an unknown you would be hard pushed to spot it unless you were in the front few rows. Of course if you were to move around you would soon realise that it was in fact flat.
Madams Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 It might be 4D, But we live in a 3D world and cant comprehend the 4th dimension. Imagine if you could only go Forwards Backwards And left And right. You wouldnt understand the concept of going Up and Down. (Theoretical Physics)
