Wingnut
Right... I have a strand 530i and a strand 300 series. I've networked them together with a hub, and have managed to get the 300 to work as a backup. What I want to do is use the 300 as a remote console. I'm now stuck. can't seem to set it up? I think I need to use the server software, but really not sure. I've read that I can setup user logins on my 530 too but I just can't fathom it. The network is definitely working like I said because I can get it to work as a backup. Can anyone help? Also if I network an old pc running the software into the network, will I be able to use that to login to the main console too?? Thanks in advance... gareth
Open the 220node.cfg file (found in c:\220os\) in a text editor - in there you'll find a line part way down the file which tells the console what it is (main, remote, backup) . If you change that so that it starts up as a remote, and also in the file tell it the IP address of the main console that you want it to connect to, then reboot, it should log into the main desk as a remote. Wingnut
thanks for that gareth - yep I already tried that, but with no joy - even though I change the value to tell it it is a remote console, when it starts up, it still thinks it is another main console. I've been told to try looking in access rights, but when I try and enter access rights it beeps and tells me that access is denied. Do I need to somehow run the server software on the 530 and if so, how do I do that?? thanks ps - I did also put in the ip address of the main console and reboot etc... gareth
No, I don't think you need the server software for simple main/remote networking, or for using SN10x nodes - the bog-standard Networker software deals with that. What version are you running? If you like, e-mail me your 220node.cfg file and I'll take a look at it ....
richard
You need to make sure it is logging in as a different user number to the main console. Usually main is console 1, so you should set this to console 2, otherwise any key you press on the 300 will appear on the 500, and vice-versa. Wingnut
Thanks for the suggestions - I had setup the 220node.cfg correctly there was just one other setting I hadn't enabled on the 530. A good friend of mine (A clever git) with that extra knowledge popped in and fixed the problem within seconds!
Martin
Also if I network an old pc running the software into the network, will I be able to use that to login to the main console too??<{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yes this should work fine if you set it up the same as your 300 running as remote. You just need to make sure you have a compatible network card and possibly extra drivers. Generally most 3com cards should be fine. Although if you run the software under Win98 I think you can let windows handle the drivers and the hardware doesn't matter, but it's better to run it under DOS. We recently bought a £90 laptop to dedicate as a designers remote. Makes the daily production desk setup easy as it's just one cat5 cable to run and one laptop to move. It doesn't need to be very powerful, a PentiumII 200Mhz, 32Mb RAM, should be fine. This is certainly a good alternative to the 'X Connect' USB dongle. It also lets you work offline too, which the X Connect doesn't.
