Magic Q - DJ. Mobile phone. Execute screen

OK so here's my idea. and firstly apologies for not being as computer literate as many of you.

 

I have a nightclub that wants to update to a new control system. I have bought a touchscreen laptop (only with an expensive loosable pen)

I have created an execute window for all the lighting chases and commands.

 

So here's the thing, can I get the DJ to download magic Q on his phone. load the execute screen onto the phone and control the show from his phone. This way he will not loose the pen, or break the laptop. Never trust a DJ with anything he can break, coz he will..

 

Also with the Magic Q £60 dongle , can I access the encoders on the phone for ease of programming. or do I need a wing ? (does this unlock the connection features for the android phone)

 

if any of this is possible, how do I link a mobile phone to a laptop, in simple terms please. I know it has to be networked, and the sub net and IP settings need to be the same. But can somebody give me an easy step by step guide as to how to do this.

In order to use the mobile remote functionality, you'll need some MagicQ hardware - a wing for example. The USB dongles don't unlock that facility.

I haven't used Magic Q, but would assume you could run a VNC server on the laptop, and get the DJ to install a VNC viewer on his phone (Android or iOS).

 

Failing that, can you not assign keyboard commands and just give him the keyboard?

You could then either connect this to the laptop in the DJ booth or a more sensible option would be to get a cheap Cat5 KVM extender in the DJ Booth and put the Laptop somewhere safe back of house ?

 

Or

 

Why not install software on an old desktop PC and put it in the DJ booth along with Touchscreen monitor.

 

Finally please don`t tar all DJ`s with the same brush! I manage a team of over 100 DJ`s who are all professional , technically minded and have never damaged any equipment in our DJ booths.... Maybe you need to review your current DJ line up if they are prone to breaking things! :)

The phone app needs hardware to unlock the operation - it doesn't work on a computer with just a dongle.

You can often find good POS cash-till style touch screen monitors on ebay for under £100. These are finger touch, toughened and designed to survive on till use behind bars. Look for ELO/Philips.

 

As said above if your DJs break this sort of thing they need a quiet chat with the boss...

The 2 universe dongle is the cheapest hardware I think which will unlock the phone connectivity through the app. It also allows you to maximise the execute window and request a password to switch back into the programming side of things again.

 

If you don't need the two universes then maybe the official sound to light unit will provide you with a better solution if you are running led or just want to program some basic sound to light looks.

 

We have a lot of installations doing a very similar thing, although I would advise that giving a dj control of anything is asking for trouble.

 

You can use fairly cheap android tablets to run the app and get the functionality.

 

Your best bet would be to speak with Chamsys and ask them what's best. They are friendly and will advise you based on your needs.
