7.1 Sound Cards

5.1 and 7.1 refer to the number of speakers in the configuration, or more correctly in this case, the number of outputs from the soundcard.

"When you encounter 7.1-channel output, bear in mind that this isn't a true surround sound format. Rather it refers to home theatre equipment manufacturers' proprietary implementation of two back-surround channels using the same back-surround audio signal."

In 5.1, you have:

Left

Centre

Right

Left-Surround

Right-Surround

Subwoofer (low frequency channel) (This is what the '.1' refers to, however, if it is '.2' this simply means you have two subwoofers)

In 7.1, you have:

Left

Centre

Right

Left-Suround

Right-Surround

Left-Rear

Right-Rear

It's all explained fairly well, here: http://www.homecinemachoice.com/articles/w...00106_sound.php

you're right in thinking 7.1 would be better, but at the end of the day, its more important how well positioned the speakers are, and how good the source material and amplifaction are.
