stormster
I have been using cast's wysiwyg for design work for several years a friend of mine charlie started using vectorworks about the same time, I saw a few of his plans recently, and thought the symbols were so much more detailed than wysiwyg. check out the pdf at www.cmlighting.com my question is , is this the level of detail at the moment and has anyone used both products that can compare?? Thanks
SimonW
I'm not sure what you mean by 'detailed'. Bear in mind that within WYSIWYG you've got complete control over the symbols used for given fixtures, and the manner that colour, gobo and hookup information are displayed around them. Whilst I only took a look at a few of the plots on that site, I didn't see anything that couldn't be done with WYSIWYG. With R10, you've also got the joy's of 'New Plots' which make it simple to turn your spatially accurate drawing into something that's readable, by allowing you to rotate booms, move floor lamps, and shift overlapping bars. You can also move lantern information around to ensure that everything is where it can easily be read. Cheers, Simon.
the kid
Is there a free version of vectorworks? at the moment I'm still looking about for what the best light design programme of me is. What's R10? Admittedly vectorworks has got amazing quality symbols but are they really needed? with the movers for me its to exact.

Thanks<{POST_SNAPBACK}> I think I mean about the actually shading of lamps rather than just line drawings, im aware of the unit ident stuff being flexible, I think it was more the fact that the unit look som much more detailed, especially when you zoom in. gareth
check out the pdf at www.cmlighting.com my question is , is this the level of detail at the moment and has anyone used both products that can compare??Pete, I'm sure Charlie's site is a lovely one, and I'd love to see the plan you refer to so that I might comment on the symbols - but his site seems to be either very badly coded, or broken - I can't get past the "Enter Flash site - you must have Macromedia Flash to view this site, blah blah" page in either Opera or IE. It might have something to do with Norton Internet Security - but any site that makes me turn off my firewall in order to view it is not one that I'm going to bother viewing, I'm afraid, and I suspect many other people will be of the same opinion. Why oh why do people insist on using Flash all over their websites? (Well, apart from it being something of a coding euphemism for 'look how big my willy is' ....) See this thread for some earlier comments from Blue Room members regarding the use of Flash on websites.
