Penguin_Maz
Hiya, I'm currently studying a BTEC National Diplomam for Technical Theatre and I am looking at Uni Course's now. I want a really good Uni with a good course, but I'm a bit of a sap, because I dont want to move away from home (my mum does all my cleaning for me! I cant leave!) I've looked for course's, but I've found nothing and have gradually lost patience. Does anyone know about any Uni course's in the Nottingham Area??? If you do, I'll be soooo pleased! I saw this place and thought 'thats the place to go!' after all, as my tutor says, "technicians are the Salt of the Earth!" Thanks guys n gals. PDD
I think there was BSc course at Nottingham Trent, but it was more lighting engineering than technical if I remember rightly. Never applied or found out anymore than that, and that was 5+ years ago. Incidentally, you really should reconsider not moving away from home - the whole university experience relies on being as far away from parents as possible!
Penguin_Maz
** laughs out loud ** well, yeah, I suppose your right on that one!!! Obviously I am still pondering over it, but it'll take a good course to tear me away!! Thanks 4 the info!

nataliebc1
Hey, I do understand that you don't want to move away from home, and there may be more reasons that those you have posted, but.... Uni life is partly being away from home and having fun without your parent(s) being around. No matter how good parents are they will inevetably be slightly concerned if you roll in at three in the morning blind drunk! I'm currently in my third year at Guildhall School of music and drama, and despite it not being a "normal" degree (when is anything to do with tech theatre normal?!) It has been a great experience. I thought I would miss my family, especially as I have a younger sister who I am like a second mum too. However, they were really happy for me to follow my dreams, and I would say that our relationship has improved since I left - they treat me like an adult - and although they don't quite understand what I do all day (all the typical things like "Won't striking make them give you a bad mark"etc... we see each other quite a lot, and they come and see everything I do. For a first time living away from home, Uni's with halls are a really good idea, as you are with a huge group of people - some who can cope well with being away from home, as they have experience of it, and some who aren't as used to it. (I'm not putting you into either of these catagories btw!) We did things like cooking evenings quite a lot, where we'd go to one flat, each person would take one part of dinner and we'd either all cook (Which was quite amusing, as the kitchens weren't exactly huge!) or one person would cook and we'd all take it in turns. I had a really great time, and if I had to choose I would do it all again. I know that its a hard decision to move away from home, and its not for everyone, but it is one of the biggest decisions of your life, so don't rule out going away without talking to people about it first! Talk to people who have moved away... and talk to people who have stayed - whether or not they have done anything like your course... I don't want you to feel like I'm being horrible or pushy so you don't have to listen to what I've said, but I'm trying to avoid writing my dissertation at the moment - so it had to be said! Ken Coker
Dear MazAs it says on the website For those taking A2s or BTEC National Diploma/Certificate at least 160 points should be achieved at in sciences, mathematics, technology or computing. Alternative equivalent entry qualifications are also accepted. Essentially we would like two A levels in a science/computing based subjects. We ask for this because the first year syllabus is: Core Modules:· Lighting Technology· Quantitative Methods· Live Performance SpacePrescribed Modules:· Analogue and Digital Electronics· Electrical Principles & Measurement· Analogue Communication Technology· Sound Technology· Information Technology & ElectronicComputer Aided Design· Study Skills & Continuing ProfessionalDevelopmentAll of the above modules are studied at stage 1 If you feel you do not have the technical background to take this on, we offer a year long foundation programme which will give you the science and technology you need to progress onto the degree. Many people have found this useful; a graduate from last year who came by the foundation route is now on the MA Advanced Theatre Practice at Central School. Even more details in this PDF: http://vertigo.derby.ac.uk/school/courses/...tTechnology.pdfDo you want to contact me direct at K.Coker@derby.ac.uk? The office telephone is 01332 591711. As I say, we do have some open days coming up. Cheers Ken Coker

J Pearce
Ken When is your next open day? [website seems to be down!!] Didn't find this thread till today (28th). I am really interested in this course as at the minute I am not entirely sure whether to pursue lighting or sound and a course covering the technical side sounds perfect for what I want!!!
