durian
call me old fashioned but I spent the afternoon on the sofa with some beers and watched this 86yo woman stand up , in the rain for quite a bit of it, all the way up the thames, while aunty captured every sordid moment. it was comforting to see a few radio mic gaffes, a few missed audio cues, but Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear., well done chaps. that was one massive O/B. and, as an ex ILR O/B bod, im glad I was on the sofa in that rain...... beeb also showed some nice pics of the empty stage on queen victoria's monument, I must say, it was sweet to see little see through plastic bags on the mics, and larger bags on the movers :) do you have inside knowledge of how this MaSsIvE outside broadcast was put together? love to hear tales if you have them..... poor old O/B enginneers wont get a beer this side of midnight  god bless her and all who sail in her. god save the queen too. xx
ramdram
Did I see a selection of different headsets on the choral folk standing on top of the orchestra in the last boat past? Presumed the mics might have been swapped out because of the wet? Well done to the tech bod who had the unenviable task of sorting out that lot, and well done to the cameraman too. Slightly t-I-c ref another thread about the space need for said musos...it did seem a bit mean to take up so much room the singers were forced to stand on the roof bit, in the rain. Tom
The mics for the choir on Symphony were swapped out at the last minute but more down to a communication error than the weather. This may have coursed some mis-matching but it's not the sort of thing I normally notice I'm afraid. More annoying (for me, anyway) was the fact that the BBC coverage seemed to completely ignore the rest of the Herald Music Boats. Each of these had a live band/orchestra/choir of some sort and were equipped, by two marvellous sound companies, with full PA systems as well as being specially decorated. The sound from these were fantastic and the staying power of the musicians, some of whom performed for almost two hours in the open in torrential rain, truly amazing. I was on one of the music pageant boats. We were taking care of 5 of the 10 music boats on the water, including the mentioned LPO boat. Local PA on the boats were handled by independent companies, and we sent a feed to the beeb for broadcast.I can tell you one thing. We got VERY wet on those boats. A lot of mics got very wet also. I went up on deck for 5 minutes a couple of times to reposition some stuff, and came back in completely soaked, while the young musicians on our vessel were up there for over 2 hours. Hats off to them, they were the courageous ones...
paulears
Would I be right in thinking those other boats were playing music written by people who have not been dead for a while? I'd hate to think how much the release would cost keeping in mind the number of viewers and the number of territories! You could also have problems if any of the musos were in the MU, because they'd be entitled to payments too. many wouldn't claim, but some would! Tom
Nope Paul. Everything was negotiated, cleared and paid for. There were no problems there. The BBC only took direct feeds from some three boats, including Symphony, where they also had a full camera team. I have to agree with you Valentine , the young brass players were amazing. I had grave concerns for them as they approached Hungerford Bridge in the pouring rain but they came under playing "There's no Business Like Show Business", singing and waving and clearly having a great time. True professionals. Did you loose any mics?

I guess we'll find out next time we plug them in! Cling film was our friend on this one! The kids were amazing, I think they've earned a couple of days of school B-)
Jivemaster
Seemingly a lot of effort put into an event for which the BBC has had a LOT of criticism for the amount of talking head time and the lack of knowledge the presenters displayed in words. "... have been watching the pageant for nearly an hour and I am thoroughly fed up with all the "Talking Heads" The BBc seem to have wheeled out every reporter they can find and asked them to utter about almost any inconsequential drivle rather than anything about the boats or the organizations being represented." is a fair view of the boat fraternity's opinion of the presentation (copied from a boat forum) Some of the boats may be old but most have good internet! Gone are the days of commentators who knew about the subject and had hours of notes lest there was a delay that they had to cover for.

paulears
I thought it a bit ironic that the Caister Lifeboat was seen when they were talking about the RNLI - ironic because the RNLI told Caister their lifeboat wasn't needed, so they withdrew it. The crew, seeing how many lives they'd saved decided they wanted to continue, so put two fingers up to the RNLI and got Bernard Matthews (as in Boootiful) to buy them the big boat, and then Jim Davidson bought them the inshore boat. They continue to save lives and many locals suspect the RNLI just didn't like a lifeboat being run by people with one tooth who live in the pub. They're good old boys and do a great job - but everyone assumes every lifeboat belongs to the RNLI, and they don't!
Tom
My favourite moment of the very little coverage I saw was as the Queen boarded the Royal Barge.Sophie Raworth sitting on the sofa says "I was on the Royal, Barge a couple of week ago and it didn't look like that". To which Matt Baker replied "thats because you were on Gloriana".If they couldn't identify the two headline boats what hope did they have with the rest of them. The "horns" are actually designed for stadiums etc, narrow dispersion and very directional.. one of the barges had Guy Barker's Big Band on, this was mixed below deck with a set of Funktion One monitors with Tony Andrew listening over the engineers shoulders.. this happened whilst people walked along the bank with iPads/laptops controlling the XTA gear tuning the system. very clever... Head this from the engineer
