johnny utah
hi there, sorry if this has been asked before but my company has decided to go down the Displayport route, what's people opinions on this? most of the kit we have is HDMI so why they've decided to roll this out now I'm not too sure. Do you think that it'll bypass HDMI and kit in the future will come with Displayport sockets instead? thanks in advance
trolley01
DisplayPort and HDMI are two quite different things. DisplayPort is designed primarily as PC to monitor interface. It is fully digital, very high data transfer rates, but has max recommended cables lengths of 3m for copper and 15m for fibre optic varieties. HDMI is a replacement for all the various AV interfaces - SCART, RGB, Composite, S-Video. It supports multi-channel audio, 3D images and large screen resolutions (3000 x 2000 quad HD IIRC). You have not said what your company does - so it is a bit hard to say whether their decision is right or wrong in my opinion. However - from a theatre perspective I would be suprised that they had chosen displayport over HDMI. HDMI would be more backwards compatible with legacy equipment using DVI or Analog. However both forms have practical cable length limitations, which mean in whatever format, long lengths are going to have to be converted to Cat5e/6 cable to be useable, and as DisplayPort to Cat5e/6 converters are not as readily available as HDMI converters, I think HDMI would be a more sensible choice. HDMI and DisplayPort are not designed to compete with each other though. They are intended to complement each other. Each has a purpose, and they should be used accordingly depending on the application.
Affe
HDMI has DRM included in the data flow somehow. DRM = Digital rights management. Could be good to knowAffe
BlueShift
A few large prominent companies (Riedel, as an example) use displayport because its royalty-free. As an open source standard, there are no licensing fees. if you use a DP++ port, then you can do straight cable conversion to HDMI or DVI, as these formats can be carried within the displayport connector.
