Before Uni you can do a BTEC in Technical Theatre (I know a few people on here who are doing them so they might beable to tell you all about these), you can also do a BTEC in performing arts I think where in the second year you can specialise in techncial (lighting, sound and SMgmnt).

You can also do BTEC (Level 4 NQF) short courses in "Light and Sound- Technical Theatre Management", "Front of House Management", "Concert Lighting", "Stage Sound", "Set Design Management", "Sound Studio Management" and "Live Sound".

You can do a BTEC National (certificate, award or diploma) in "Performing Arts- Theatre Technology", "Performing Arts- Stage Management", "Performing Arts- Make-up", "Performing Arts- Set Design", "Set Construction", "Performing Arts- Production" and the more vague "Performing Arts- Technical"

More info can be found here: Edexcel Exam Board

Even Before that, GCSE students can take pick 1 of their 2 units/ projects from: Acting (Scripted or Devised- 1 unit must be this), Stage Management, Lighting, Sound, Set Design, Puppet Making, Costume, Make-Up. Not many schools offer all options, I ahve found very few offering Make-Up or Puppetery as options for full units/ Projects.

With Edexcel courses - the title is just a sort of pathway, so when investigating you need to always ask what actual unit names and numbers are part of the course - the edexcel site will let you have a pdf of the entire spec at Level 3 (BTEC National level) and Level 4 (HND Level). There are lots of rules for working out the makeup of the course as a whole, but larger colleges have a lot of leeway in choosing their own individual components

Thanks Guys,

You see what I've found so far, unless its part of a combined performing arts type course, there are no course out there that are suited for someone who wants to simple be involved in a technical aspect I.e lighting with out the drama?

Any view on this?

No, that's not strictly speaking correct. Bigger colleges who have large performance departments often run a parallel course that is only technical. Smaller colleges just don't have the numbers. I'm not sure where you are but if you pm me, I'll give you details of one college who do do what you want.

You see, im on my final year at derby uni, studying SLLET Bs. In the city I lived in there was no way at a-level, I could do a course towards my type of degree, without doing drama...and therefore im doing a mini assigment on it...

if anyone knows of a course which is more technology based, please let me know.....

I'm doing a Btec ND in technical theatre in Abingdon, granted I might be the last year doing it because theres not enough people wanting to do it.

I know that there are lots of college corses where you can do a Alevel in drama but specilise in technical(although you do have to do one peace of acting)

I did a one day BTEC Event Technician (Level 1 IIRC). Not sure how much use it will be, but it was free so I can't complain. There were various practical and theoretical tests during the day, separated by introductions to the various disciplines and event planning. I also have to complete reports on some events I am involved with.
