supressing mains spikes on audio lines

I've just installed a zoned audio system using cat6 twisted pairs fed by balanced signals. The system, though quiet, is proving very susceptible to voltage clicks, pops etc. I suppose I could try using a spare cable within the Cat6 and make ground connections at the Zone mixer and active cabs. However, not sure if that would solve it so what about the option to use a spike suppressor at obvious mains outlet - anyone had success with domestic versions of the Belkin etc., variety?

Clicks and pops are usually a symptom of radiated rather then conducted noise, and as such I would be surprised if mains filtering (except possibly filtering the noise SOURCE)would help.

My bet is that your active speakers have very little common mode rejection in the HF band, and that that is how the noise is getting in, ferrites on the signal leads might help, failing that something with a properly thought out input stage, or possibly an audio isolating transformer (OEP?) at the receiver.

Regards, Dan.

Two thoughts. Are the clicks and pops on the amp outputs? Plug the speaker with short leads and see if it still clicks - if it does the interference is getting in through the amp PSU and a mains suppressor might help.

Balanced only works if the ins and outs are properly balanced. Line level down twisted pair should be almost immune to interference. Are the speaker inputs balanced? Electronic balancing isn't always the best and transformers at each end may be your answer.
