Jivemaster
Posted on streets round the London B... of Newham recently is the creation of a All Newham (NO) parking zone for the period of the olympics. Parking in Newham will be restricted to Newham residents and businesses. It's almost certain that other local boroughs (Tower Hamlets, Hackney, Walthamstow and more) will adopt a similar srtrategy. Be aware that if you are coming to the Stratford site or the ExCel site that without a parking place you will get towed. Other boroughs may vary or not! paulears
I wonder if there's any scheme to compensate businesses for loss of business if only locals can park?
themadhippy
And how do you prove your a resident or buissness? let me quess you purchase a permit for £xtortionate.amount
Jivemaster
Well I was in Greenwich gigging for millenium night and all reality was suspended, I think that the olympic fallout zone will be like that for several weeks. Strangely the parking permit is free for vehicles with a registered address in the borough, people who have a "firms vehicle" have to apply for a free permit with residence proof. Assume that other local boroughs will have special regs too, I only see Newham regs because I live there.
pjb304
Is it just me who thinks if you live in the borough it would make sense to apply for parking permits for any cars you own, and rent out space on your driveway to others?
Jivemaster
Very few houses have driveways in Newham.
kerry davies
I know that Hackney charges my mate for parking in his street, visitor permits are limited and paid for and the wardens start patrolling residential streets at 7 am. That is before the extended zones and limits come in for this summer. Van parking costs a fortune. Some streets in Newham will have even residents banned from parking so anybody who even thinks of travelling by car to the "Five Boroughs" is mad. They have a site for local residents parking and road closures but last time I looked the maps were all blank. Maps?

jonathanhill
I am sure that more of these stories will crop up as we approach the games. For me I am quite glad that I am in no way involved.
brainwave-generator
Some friends of mine have got their letter in the post explaining how they will all get free parking permits, for up to 3 cars per household (most houses in the area are multiple occupancy rather than family homes). Their plan is to park their cars at their parent's houses in whatever part of the UK, and stick the permits on eBay / gumtree. When we lived in Wembley I got £500 for my car pass for 1 day, when the Champions League final was on. So god only knows what an Olympics-long parking ticket will go for. Jivemaster
Please, this post is not to knock an area but to inform those who may need to work there of the parking challenges.
mrboo
You dont need to get a permit they just look up the Reg with DVLA to see if the car is from a resident. so cctc smart cars will just drive round and recored every car parked there no rush to send the ticket. Jivemaster
Vehicles with a registered address in Newham will get free access to Newham's free parking according to availability! Vehicles registered elsewhere will need permits to park anywhere on Newham streets. Similar restrictions will apply in other surrounding boroughs, and likely other boroughs with olympi venues. If you need your car or van to do the job then you could well need a permit.
