Comms headsets

Hi All,

Not sure if this is entirely the correct place for this topic - mods, please feel free to move it! I've looked through other threads and not really found the answer I'm looking for, and I'm in no way an expert when it comes to comms.

In work we run an ASL system, but rarely gets used (we're primarily a music venue, so tend to use Motorola walkie-talkies with headsets), so I haven't really played around with the inns and outs of it all.

However, I have recently aquired a Canford power supply unit (3-XLR ports) in College with some other equipment from another closed-down establishment. I have a few questions, so I'll fire away.

As I understand it, this will run a 3-way comms system on its own without anything additional other than the headsets/beltpacks - am I right?

Can you use standard XLR to connect the headsets/beltpacks and the PSU?

Would you require the beltpack to use the system, or could you plug the headset straight into the PSU and keep it as a continuously open line?

And lastly, and probably most importantly, does anyone know where you can get cheap (I'm talking school budgets here - so very cheap!) belt-packs and headsets?

Any help would be much appreciated! http://www.blue-room.org.uk/public/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif

Cheers, Si.

Is this the device you are referring to?

If it is, you can run 3 comms circuits off it. This device just has to go at one end of the circuit and then you daisychain from beltpack to beltpack. Each circuit can supposedly take 12 beltpacks. (all joined over standard XLR3) The headsets plug into the beltpacks, usually by XLR4 I believe.

It would be easier if you gave a bit more info as to what you would use it for.

Edit to add: The green buttons on the front of the unit are for merging circuits. For example, if you had the DSM and Control room on one circuit and the stage crew on another circuit, you could click the button between and they would be able to talk to each other. Can be useful.

Cheers for the replies.

I think it'd probably mainly just get used to talk from the Sound/LX at the rear of the auditorium to the stage side, so I doubt it would ever require more than 3 headsets & beltpacks.

Its mainly sourcing something cheap that's my issue at the minute, but I'll keep looking around.
