cedd
Hi all!I need to open up one of my s5.3 beltpacks to change the battery case, trouble is it's a very specific security screw. I have a set of security drivers but none of them fit. Anybody got a source of one?
timtheenchanteruk
do you have a pic of the screw? I have a few obscure security bits (and some I have made myself)
Lamplighter
ChrisYou could give Mike at MLEC a call, he is usually very helpful. He could probably tell you the correct tool and where to source it.Brian
cedd
Funnily enough, Mike was my next port of call. Didn't want to go straight there though, as it felt a bit cheeky asking for tips and tools on how to repair something, from a company who make their living repairing things! (though I did buy the battery compartments from them, so I guess it's not quite AS bad!). Tim - the packs are all in a venue at the minute, so I can't get to them. Thanks though. If MLEC can't help then I'll post a pic. It's like a star drive, but instead of pointy bits, it's squared off. Looks a bit like the Red Hot Chilli Peppers logo seen here (sorry, it's the first thing that came to mind when I looked at it!).
ramdram
Could it be a Torx drive perhaps? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torx Note there are many other diagrams of fixings on the page....anything close? The Polydrive seems to be a squared off Torx. IF Torx then you will have no trouble at all sourcing the tool or tool bit. Edit: and then you might look here...gives the whys and wherefores of the design philosphy (Tri wing is merely an entry to the wiki' series on fastners): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tri-Wing
DrV
Is it not just a Torx (T5 or T6) with a peg in the middle? I bought a set of them from Toolzone specifically for the first time I had to open up an S5.x beltpack. The Toolzone label on the back says "SD274 - 6 piece star screwdriver set". They are Torx drivers with a hole drilled up the middle to accommodate the peg. Dave
cedd
I don't think it actually is a Torx, but if DrV's managed to use a Torx bit to get them opened then I'll give that a go. They have the same spacing of the "teeth" but they're a different shape (rectangular, rather than triangular). There isn't one on Ramdram's wiki link that matches either. I thought I'd bought torx in this set I've just received, but it turns out they're "Torq" - serve me right for blaming the spelling of the person posting the ad! I'll order a set of Torx from toolzone and see how I get on. C
ramdram
Very intriguing...I had a look for the Torq kit and it seems to be an offset cross head...which might be under a different name/brand./description depending on where they are made/on sale??? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Roebuck-Torq-Set-Bit-No-10-X-25Mm-X-1-4Inch-Hex-/280740386525?pt=UK_Hand_Tools_Equipment&hash=item415d6e56dd Perhaps you might come back and let us know exactly what tool/bit was successful purely on the grounds of, "if you needed to then why not others", sort of thing. revbobuk
This reference list is helpful - could it be Tamper-resistant TORX Plus? Security bit types Or maybe not - the tamper-resistant version of TORX plus appears to be 5-lobed, not 6. Machine Mart stock them, if you need them. Seano
They have the same spacing of the "teeth" but they're a different shape (rectangular, rather than triangular). That sounds like "Torx Plus": http://www.triumphrat.net/attachments/twins-technical-talk/35774d1304131456-stripped-cam-cap-bolt-torx_vs_torxplus.jpg

cedd
Excellent! That just happens to be the set I ordered before the weekend! Should be here today or tomorrow so I'll report back as soon as it's here.
cedd
My set arrived late last week. It's a Torx T7 for these screws. Changing the battery case wasn't THAT terrible. There's a little soldering involved to remove and replace the 2 wires to the battery case, and you have to remove the display pcb (on a small multiway connector) from the main pcb. All in all though it wasn't too scary. I'd suggest replacing the battery door at the same time, for the pence it costs. Once the battery clip fails, the door relies upon a pair of pegs at the hinge locating in the bodypack to stay shut. These get worn down pretty quickly once the main clip has failed, so it's worth replacing. Managed to get my dodgy one swapped before this weekend's show. Thanks to the Blue Room collective for the help!
