DjSwirl
Hi OK we have all seen dodgy technicians on facebook, so I don’t end up on it I thought I would ask some questions. I need to mount some LED battens (see link below) on to some steel box section aprox 150x200mm. I can not drill, or make any permanent fixings to the box section, they have to be a ridged fixing as tight as I can to the box section ie not hanging, the only thing I can think of is some vary large jubilee / wormdrive clips round the box section and ends of the mounting brackets of the lights, I think ratchet straps would be to big, any thoughts or better ideas on this? Next question, the venue, the easiest way to explain it would be floating open sided 2 level pavilion, it does have roof which I am told it water tight. I am looking at mounting these lights up in the roof space but they are not IP65 rated, short any rain coming in sideway and then heading up these shouldn’t get wet, but how dodgy is it using these lights for this? ladyjayne
How many battens are we talking? First thing that popped up in my head would be having something made along the lines of this: http://i01.I.aliimg.com/photo/v0/370494977/square_pipe_clamps.jpg But with a 1.5'' M8 or M10 bolt instead of the screw. mac.calder
We have some similar LED battens - cable ties work well to secure them. We built a set in a marquee out of octonorm where we attached them with cable ties straight around the fixture.
Ashley R
+1 to the above solution. Thats also what I was thinking. More like this http://hawkinstraffic.com/Single_Clamp_on_U-Bracket.html But obviously the top bit being square, not round.
AndyJones
Can you cable tie them directly into the roof without the box section?

DjSwirl
Hi OK the plot thickens, below are some photos are the downstairs of the of the pavilion, as you can see I can not get cable ties or straps over the beams so over to any suggestions, how I can attach my LED battens, I don’t care how silly or out there they are, I’m running out of ideas Brian http://www.bdjc.co.uk/imgs/IMG_2842.JPG http://www.bdjc.co.uk/imgs/IMG_2844.JPG http://www.bdjc.co.uk/imgs/IMG_2850.JPG http://www.bdjc.co.uk/imgs/IMG_2882.JPG http://www.bdjc.co.uk/imgs/IMG_2888.JPG
david.elsbury
Is the structure aluminum or steel?
Don Allen
Magnets or clamps. Either way you are not going to be able to attach a safety wire. If they just want it done the they have to pay for heavy duty magnets. The Showtec led battens have mounting brackets so look for a magnet with a hole. Eclipse make circular magnets with a threaded hole that you use for tool cupboards and doors. Eclipse Magnetics UK Magnets may be safer than woodworking clamps. light-man
Not wanting to sound too silly, but do they have to be on the roof?Depending on their use, could they not be mounted high-up, against the roof, but vertically on the upright columns?
paulears
Ground support? How about 4 vertical lengths of scaff around each upright, then go out from each of these horizontally at the top? If there is enough height, then the horizontal runs could be ladder truss?

Yes, it's open sided so the light have to be in the roof just in case it rains, plus some spandex sails are going up to cover the steel Brian Magnets or clamps. rossmck
Magnets were the first thing that popped into my mind on seeing that - glad Eclipse have sorted it out (post some pictures of the finished article :-)) To answer your other original question - no these are not IP rated however a bit of sideways rain getting onto them is unlikely to cause any problems ( I have several which have been used outside many times without issue, even when it's a little damp ) The roof should stop them being directly rained on :)
DjSwirl
A bloody genius idea, 4’ IP65 fluorescent tube fittings, retro fit the lights in them !!! Will post photos if I get the job, but they are pushing for a lower price which due to costs in the event I can't do, they were not happy so not sure I will get it, should know by next week Will keep you posted Brian
