Black Gauze offcuts

Hiya!

Has anyone got any bits of black gauze going spare? I just need enough to stick to the inside of my car windows... yes I know it will look crap and I should really tint but I'm far too lazy for that and it's just to keep equipment insurers happy! I'm in Maidstone but can travel.

Cheers :-)

Can't help feeling this would be likely to get you arrested. Maybe nip down to Halfords and buy some regulation window tint?

The law applies to the front windscreen, and to the front doors. 75% and 70% transmission respectively.

For the back doors and rear window, there are no rules. Think about small car-derived vans...

Are you really sure that'll keep your insurers happy? The insurance I've had over the years has always insisted that goods be out of sight in a locked compartment not accessible from the front of the vehicle i.e. boot or back of van. Putting stuff on the back seat and covering up the windows seems like an easy way for them to refuse to pay out.

Doubt it'd keep the insurers happy but yes, you can do whatever you want to your rear windows, minimum light transmission rules only apply to the front (passenger and driver) and windscreen as has already been said above..

Window tints alone wont be good enough for an insurer I'm almost certain, out of sight doesn't simply mean 'slightly darker' also using something like gauze (which isn't commonly used on cars for cosmetic reasons ;)) will draw attention too your vehicle, which is probably the opposite effect from what you want to achieve.

..or at the very least make you appear to be some vampire-wannabe goth-a-like :P

EDIT: On a side note, which adhesive would you use? I can't think of one which would remain clear enough to not restrict vision in conjunction with the gauze, but also strong enough to withstand windows being wound up and down. Or mayeb you're thinking of sacrificing the up and downness? Spray mount might do, it'd certainly be something you could apply thinly.

Oh, see now I'm thinking about it from a prop-makers point of view.

Do what I do, throw a manky old dog blanket over the gear and pay a small child or golf-sign holder to watch it while you're away .

Thanks for the replies guys :-) I am well aware of the law concerning tinted windows etc. I was going to just gaffa the gauze up! The last vehicle I had was tinted with that limo black stuff, and you had to press your nose against the screen to see in, the gear was also covered with a black sheet so really not visible.

The insurance states (for the value I am carrying) that it can be left in a vehicle overnight if inconvenient to unload provided it can't be seen and there is a steering lock fitted.

Called Kent police headquarters today and asked if I could paint the inside of the back windows, and they said that was fine! So probably just do that :-D

If you hadn't guessed, im not bothered about cars other than a tool to get from a to b, I think of mine as a flight case with an engine ** laughs out loud **!
