Lighting Manuals

Seriously? Stop being lazy.

Google is your friend.

Something like "Martin moving light manual" will bring up some useful results.

Try inserting the names of the products you have, or want to know about, instead of 'Martin' above.

Hint: The manufacturer's websites will have the manuals for all of their products, so start by finding the website for the manufacturer and go from there.

Just google it!

E.g. for a Martin MAC 250 Entour, just search Martin Mac 250 Entour User Manual, and got to the 1st or 2nd link.

For something that's older, you may have to look through multiple pages to find what your looking for, same applies for a lot of Chinese junk.

(I wish all manufacturer's had such a comprehensive website as Martin's, going back 20 years of user manuals and other bits)

Emma - the forum has some quaint and perhaps old fashioned ways, but I'm sure you've met enough people by your job at Malvern Theatres, to realise that we've a pretty low tolerance for people trying to find the easy answers.

In the past, it's even been suggested that maybe the Blue Room should collect manuals and put them in one place? The usual response was that it's a full time job keeping a central resource up to date, and of course copyright problems - but the main thing is that somebody has to do the work finding them - hence why everyone who has spent hours on the net finding something a little uncommon gets a bit cross with people who just want the easy option. There are many on here, like me who had to write to manufacturers to get a catalogue and price list, meaning at least a week to get info you wanted. This means the current "I want everything, now" demands of the younger people just wind some of us up. Your request, while sounding quite reasonable on the surface, does in fact mean you can't be bothered to do the research yourself - because the info IS out there in almost every case, or because you don't know how to use Google properly. It really does have to be one of those.

If you said "My boss wants me to get the manuals for every item of kit we have, and I have managed to find everything apart from the one for the ZXY123 we bought ten years ago, which I cannot find on the net anywhere as they have gone bust. Does anyone have a copy they could email/post to me? I'd refund the postage."

This would produce results because people might be willing to get up and have a hunt. If they can use google, then come back and give you the URL - which often happens - you really could have done that yourself?

See the problem? I'm sure you didn't expect what happened, but it's a VERY common request, and always gets this response. After all, I've just spent longer typing this than you perhaps did looking for the manual, because it didn't come up on the first Google page?

Theres an app for the iphone called 'Lighting Handbook' (a quick serach of the app store with bring it up) which lets you select the consle/fixture etc. and has an option to read the manual for the item. it has all the pin-in/outs for almost every cable you need aswell + various other important stuff, its everything a lampy needs in his/hers pocket!

well worth getting in my opinion
