LX-Dave
MIDI Over Ethernet? The first Google result for a cross-platform application is this, although there are bound to be others which work on both PC and Mac. Dave

LX-Dave
As far as I know, since it's using ethernet, it can run simultaneously with other transmissions using the port, and even across a standard LAN. Although I don't know what latency would be like. However if you wanted to use a hardware option you could always use USB MIDI interfaces to create a MIDI link. sleepytom
make sure the out is going to the in - sometimes the plugs are confusingly labelled. use a midi monitor such as http://www.snoize.com/MIDIMonitor/ to check your getting data.
