Unless you have to be able to switch between the two, could you just use a Maglite - 3xD cell is just over 1 foot long.

Can always be spray painted.

That will give you your white - and can you then just make a custom cover out of the required colour in Gel and just slip it over?

No need for it to be custom even! http://www.google.co.uk/products/catalog?q=maglite+accessory+pack&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=970328956042424603&sa=X&ei=3Fu9Tsr8F8yE8gOP08ilBA&ved=0CEUQ8wIwAQ

The requirement of the O/P is not entirely clear, do you want an item that emits light only from the end ? In which case a standard flashlight with colour filter would appear suitable.

Or do you mean something about a foot long that emits light over all or most of its length.

As the former is so easily achieved, I suspect that the O/P means the later.

What about a transparent plastic tube, containing torch bulbs or LEDs in both white and violet, with a switch to select the desired colour.

Depending on the light output and run time required, either conceal batteries within, or use a battery pack in the actors pocket.

Or what about a 300mm flourescent lamp, enclosed in a plastic tube and with a remote battery and driver circuit. Make it any colour you want, but not easily changed.

Somewhere deep in the "store" (junkheap) I have a rechargable camping light which is a baton of LED's with a magnet on the back. It gives off about 10/12 inches of fairly bright light from one side and was dirt cheap. I think it was sold as a vehicle working light which I picked up in a service station.

Boatman, back to the mothership with you.

If you want the long tube-y light, you may want to look for inspection lights.

We've got one in the workshop that only outputs on one side but it isn't beyond the realms of possibility to either modify it (swap some of the LEDs over or add another board in) or find one that does both sides.

Ours is a Draper one with a really long retractable lead, they do one that's rechargeable and I've heard that you can get them pretty cheap from other brands. The circuit inside is very basic, the cable carries a 12V supply and the lamp just has a big current limiting resistor and +ve and -ve lines up either side of a PCB. Between those are three LEDs and a small resistor in series, with many lines like that in parallel. Once modification option would be to remove some of the LEDs and plonk them on the other side of the PCB.

To get the colour you're after, put a bit of gel in between the LED PCB and the outer tube and you're done - easily possible because that's how the Draper branding fits on our one :)

Edit: the reason I know about this is because it broke last week so I had it in bits on the workbench...
