Alec
Like the others say, it's fine to use just the RGB channels on a 5+ channel fixture. However, if the addressing isn't adjustable on the controller, you're screwed if RGB can't be configured on the fixture as channels 1-3. This has been my dilemna in getting 12 LED cans running off a simple 1224 SceneSetter. The solution for us was to buy these STAIRVILLE LED FLOOD PANEL 150 20° cans from Thomann. I like the compact form factor, and the fact that you can configure them as 3, 5 or 7 channel. So, configured as basic 3 channel RGB fixtures, they can occupy adjacent sets of 3 channels on the desk and the job's a good'un. And for £45 per unit, I like them. Great for a band to carry around too, as they're so compact. Just a real shame that the cheapie LED cans don't let you pick the number of channels, as I bet most people who use them with a desk have no need for the extra channels. ajh51
This is a wild stab in the dark but (speaking as an electronics engineer) it is quite likely that the address settings will wrap round... That is to say if you set the start address of the LED cans to be the highest that the cans support (512 I guess) it is possible that ch1 will be 512, Ch2 will wrap round to be 1, Ch3 will be now be 2 etc etc. May not work, depending on how the controller inside the can has been programmed - but gotta be worth a try.....
