Yamaha EMX5000 -20 (problem)

Hello all

New user here so please be kind :)

Lets get straight to the point, I've recently brought a Yamaha EMX5000 Mixing desk. I got the desk fairly cheap off someone that did not have any use for the desk nor the ability to use the desk.

I've powered the desk up and the in-built amps work fine. I've gained a signal from all the 16 mono channel's using line inputs and via XLR. All seems to be fine until I noticed the LED meter display was not reading so I cranked up the volume and got a bit of action on the LED meter, keep in mind I had to push some excessive gain and push the fader on the channels quit high with the master stereo out set to unity. The signal I then receive is excessively loud with added/raised noise floor and only -20dB to -15dB on the LED meter.

Could anyone please help determine what would cause this to happen and let me know if there is a route through this.

Thanks in advance

Julian.

So, are you saying that the desk is working well, and it's only that the meters appear not to be reading much?

If so, try soloing a channel, do they work any better.

Also, are you sure there isn't a solo (PFL) button pressed anywhere, so that the meters are displaying something other than the main LR output?

The desk is working OK to my knowledge and there is definitely no channels on a (SOLO) or (PFL) I've checked for this since you posted thanks. I've soloed channels and they seem to be acting the same throughout. its just the LED metering on the stereo out that does not make sense to me?

Often with mixing desks, the main LR buss meters won't read particularly high until you find yourself running multiple channels. I wouldn't worry too much about it - make sure the meters are working accurately with the pfl button depressed - with an sm58 you should get between the top of the green section and the bottom of the orange section (ish!) on a normal mixing desk with the gain knob at 12 o clock. You'll find the metering looks a lot more lively often once you run a whole rock band through the rig.

PS - sorry in advance to the pedants about the sm58 guesstimated metering comment :)

Thanks for your suggestions guys..

After messing around for a short while I came to realize my "active monitors" output gain was turned up fully on the backs of the monitor, so I turned them down and got a great result.

Not bad to say I paid £100 for the board.

Don't sound to bad either.

Thanks again.
