mirror ball

hi

I've just bought a 12inch mirror ball and pinspot for use when I do discos. however, I'm wondering whether it would look better with the light colour changing gradually. any suggestions on what kind of light to buy? I've seen DMX colour changing Par fixtures but they are a bit out of my price range at £300 each. I'm looking for something much cheaper!

thanks

can you get DMX colour changers like that? and I could swear I have seen fixtures like a par36 but with led's that are DMX controlled on ebay somewhere....

yep you can get them on ebay. Personally, I'd just hook the motor up to a switch, or if it was a big/permenant setup create a little circuit to accept analogue 10v input, and then use that for motor off, on forwards (with adjustable speed) and then reverse. Hook it to a DMX convertor it would work well...

If you were to hit an LED colour Par onto a mirror ball, wouldn't the beams be really bad, cos I mean there's no focus so the beams would not be as sharp??

Stick with the motor one or buy a DMX colour changer, I'm sure you can get them for as low as 100 quid with dimming, strobing and a whole array of colours. Just like a scan but without the mirror.

The problem with all the DMX colour changers is that they are a wide(ish) beam angle. No good at all for hitting a mirror ball at a distance.

White pinspots are ok but the light loss through colours tends to negate the whole effect Search for the C.L.A.S.S. power spot 100W in a par 46 housing come from the Morden area SW london

Or you can get very narrow beam 12 volt PAR56 lamps (originally designed for marine searchlights). Those are actually what I use for mirror balls.

Have a look at this thread.

How about just using several different color pinspots and a cheap dimmer to slowly fade them in and out - overlapping the fade times will let them color mix nicely (the old fashioned ways are sometimes just as good)

On a different subject (but still on topic)

Does anyone know how to simulate a mirrorball in wysiwg.

wysiwyg does support mirrored surfaces but it seems to me that whilst the reflect the apearance of objects, beams of light dont bounce of them

This makes the creation of a mirror ball absolutely worthless. Can only fixtures generate beams of light?

T.D.
