Public Liability Insurance

Unusually, I am the one looking for advice on this subject for a change.

Just had a call from Robertson Taylor asking me if I was going to renew my Production Personnel Policy this year (maybe). Only thing is, the premiums were raised a "tad" back on May 1st to a minimum of £525 and they aren't doing the personal effects part of it this year :o :stagecrew: :P

I know RT are very good, but does anyone have any recommendations for a company with something more reasonably priced in the PL & Travel/Medical line? Only needs to be for the UK or maybe Europe, not Worldwide. Anyone got a contact number for Torribles or that bunch up in Manchester (Doodsons is it ?) ?

Thanks in advance.

FWIW, I get my P.L. insurance as a benefit of my BECTU membership - works out as being quite a bargain. I pay my £11.25 per month in subs, and for an extra £15 a year I am then covered by their £3million P.L. policy with Aon Risk Services. No different to any other P.L. policy, but a fraction of the cost!

They also came up trumps when I was shopping around for new tools & equipment insurance earlier this year, to cover my new Hog. Aon have a special scheme for BECTU members which provides similar cover to other insurers' equipment policies for around half the cost (£226.80 per year).

I use BECTU for Public Liability as well.

I also use AON's 'Sceneone' policy to insure equipment that I hire. I had a minor ####-up the day before a corporate event I did last year, when it turned out that the client who thought they were insured to hire equipment found that they weren't covered. I took out the policy with AON for £500 of hired gear in my care, and when I need anything serious, I can bump it up for a couple of days. £100,000 of gear can be insured for an extra £25 for a couple of days. This was the cheapest way to do it at about £150 per year.

I'm not sure I'm going to bother renewing it next year though, as I haven't used it since that one occasion...

Sorry if this has come up in the past but I searched and only really found stuff relating to pyros (Definitely not my area!)

So, who are you using/would recommend for PLI for our type of work, a lot of the policies I've looked at recently tend to be based on the requirements of builders etc.

Thank you in advance

That depends on what you're willing to do to get your premiums down - knowworImean. ;)

Though I am interested in your experience of this as I'm thinking of joining, and might take the PLI up if I need it. Is it actually a good policy, or is it just because it's there?

On paper the policy seems like a good one - it certainly ticks all the boxes in terms of things that a PLI policy should provide. But the real test of whether an insurance policy is any good is when you claim on it - and seeing as I've never (touch wood!) had to claim against my PLI I can't really say what Aon are like as insurers when the chips are down and the brown stuff hits the whirly thing.

Any offers for non-freelance insurance companies ~ ie to insure someone who's in a partnership or similar? Or to insure for freelance work AND equipment without joining a union? I'm looking at the cheaper more "dj" end of the market, but not quite going off-topic ;). Ideally someone who insures DJs AND Sound & Lighting engineers.

Cheers in advance...
