mikelx Posted October 14, 2011 Posted October 14, 2011 Help and advice please In a forthcoming production of "One flew over the Cuckoo's nest" we wish to have the effect of an electrical fault . I have looked at Le Maitre video of "Robotics" and this gives a 5 sec fallout of HOT sparks. and seems quite a big effect. Any ideas of anything smaller - just a very small flash and spark which would be safer- as the actor is supposed to rip the electrical unit off the set! As always safety is paramount. Many thanksmikelx
mark_s Posted October 14, 2011 Posted October 14, 2011 It's interesting that you should ask that, as today I was considering the exact same thing - using a robotic for the same scene in the same play! Strange coincidence! Other than that I'm afraid I can't really help you though :(

bigclive Posted October 14, 2011 Posted October 14, 2011 The robot effects are the traditional device used for this. You do want a decent amount of sparks to sell the effect, so just design it so that the actor isn't in the immediate vicinity of the fallout and is suitably trained in the effect. They do various sizes of robot. Which one did you use?
callumb Posted October 14, 2011 Posted October 14, 2011 From watching the video the effect is far less than 5 seconds! The video isn't even that long. If you want the right effect thats the best way to do about it.
Brian Posted October 14, 2011 Posted October 14, 2011 If Le Maitre's small robotics are too big for you then the TPL small ones are the ones to use.
Gareth A Posted October 15, 2011 Posted October 15, 2011 The robotics are very small. Or especially the ones we used on Beauty for the tour. They pop, shower and are extinguished within a second or so. They are quite loud however if you have never used them! Louder than you would expect! The small ones are quite good. Also beware, they do leave some nice soot marks!!
matt-hayes Posted October 15, 2011 Posted October 15, 2011 I think from memory, the ones on Beauty might have been the LM "Disney" robotics. They are smaller than small but don't seem to be on the price list or product list anymore. They were certainly still in existence at the start of the year, so might be worth a phone call to LM sales to see if they do still do them.

andy_s Posted October 15, 2011 Posted October 15, 2011 I used standard lemaitre robotic for exploding washing machine in 'Ken Campbell's Old King Cole' with actors in close proximity. Effect was instantaneous, certainly not 5 seconds duration, and fallout was minimal. No actors were harmed in the performance of this play.
Brian Posted October 16, 2011 Posted October 16, 2011 brian can you expand on TPL please - who are they?Sorry. Theatrical Pyrotechnics Limited.
mikelx Posted October 19, 2011 Author Posted October 19, 2011 Thanks for all this- problem solved so we can end this topic - sorry that in my first post about the reference to 5 seconds - I was confusing robotics with another effect having searched so many!:)Once again many thanks
