Nicktaylor
I am using an old laptop running XP Service Pack 2. It refuses to recognise the device is plugged in. I plug into my work PC and instantly it recognises something is there, I dont have install authority at work so that is far as I got.Any ideas what to try. I want to dedicate the laptop to use for lighting, ie dont really want to use my more modern one that has video edting software on. Computer is an Acer Aspire 1620 Thanks Nick
Gerry
Open "Device Manager" fr, have a look at http://pcsupport.about.com/od/windowsxp/f/opendmxp.htm if you don't know how to.Then ask the device manager to search for new devices. It should find it and recognise it.CheersGerry
Nicktaylor
Thats the odd thing it does not recognise it so I cant even get as far as getting it to recognise drivers!

greenalien
Win XP SP2 is pretty ancient, dating back to 2004 - for that reason, its USB support isn't very good, and it is no longer supported by Microsoft. Try updating to Service Pack 3 and installing all the updates since then. You'll have to download SP3 and install it manually as automatic updates don't work with SP2 any more. This is unlikely to make any difference. XP though old in computer terms is still a very good operating system and a lot faster than Vista/W7. It's worth updating to SP3 but I don't think it will help this situation. I have seen a problem with USB comm devices if lots of different devices have been used over time, the PC can only remember a certain number of devices (16 I think), after this new devices are ignored. See http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html for a utility to remove unwanted ones. Also I have seen this problem with a MIDI USB device which was fixed by inserting a USB hub in between the PC and the device, not sure why, but worth trying. Nicktaylor
On return from work I plugged into my study PC and it instantly recognised device. That was SP3, so I set the old laptop off up grading overnight. However it still does not find the box. In the end I have invested in a driver search programme which I think might be working. Now it is onto finding why my newly acquired Soundlab 4 channel DMX dimmer does not work, Then to another place wher spectra battens refuse to work with aJester desk! Hi Microsoft's USB stack has remained largely unchanged since Windows 2000. All version of XP use the same USB driver. To address the problem, try going into the BIOS and there should be a function somewhere called 'Legacy USB devices'. Make sure that it is enabled. Also, if you can change the USB2 speed from Hi-Speed to Full-Speed that might also help, as with certain hardware configurations Windows won't detect HiSpeed devices correctly. All the bestTimmeh Update. I had a fair bit of success getting the box to work. Using ChromaQ as the opertaing platform I was just starting to run LEDs when the laptop died in a big way! Nothing to do with the lighting bits , but as I was working towards using for job next week a bit sad I will have to revert to my faithful LeapFrog!
