Shez
A friend of mine is starting a project in a museum that requires some parabolic speakers - the type that you can hear when stood directly beneath but not anywhere else. She's asked me about it but it's a little sideways of my field... Google isn't being helpful - is there another name by which these are more commonly known? Seems to be a bit of a niche market. Can anyone recommend any particular products and/or companies that can supply and install such things who I can put her in touch with? Companies with a specialism in museum installations would I think be preferred - this ain't rock'n'roll!
cedd
I seemed to remember them as "spotlight speakers" though I know it's more of a consumer term thrown about on the gadget show than a proper name. nevertheless, it yields some google results. Gareth A
Could not remember the exact model, but I was doing research for a project last year where we had a large dinner table seating 20 people and each needed their own speaker so the chef could talk to them individually. ! This was something we were looking at using and gives you a good idea of what can be done! http://www.sennheiser.com/sennheiser/home_en.nsf/root/press_archive_2_2001_110aes_2
johnnymurray
When I worked on an install back in 2006 I recall them being referred to as Hypersonic Speakers - however I can't for the life of me remember what they were. Will see if I can find out though. Would this be something you were after? http://www.tkgeomedia.com/uk/produit_hss.html From a quick google they seem to be referred to as HSS speakers. Hope this helps!

Simon Lewis
Shez, You have several technologies to choose from...Have a look at Panphonics, Audio Spotlight, Sound Dome, Sound Directions, etc. as a starter. Depending on the effect you need to create, directional flat panels, digitally steered columns or even wave field synthesis can be very useful... Hope this helps! Sam Jelfs
We have a couple of the Ultrasound loudspeakers here in work, and they are very impressive (depending on what SPL / freq response you require of course) - the only thing I would say with any of this type of highly directional speaker - they need to be pointed at something absorbing to get the best effect, if they are pointed at something that will reflect the sound waves the effect is diminished...
